Share your bicycle accident stories!
I've had a few. My most recent and most scary one was driving extremely fast in the road and not realising my lock wasn't in its normal position. Little did I know that a few seconds after, the lock would get jammed in the front wheel and I'd do some sort of nose wheelie. Luckily I didn't drop off the bike although if I did, It would've been messy.

Re: Share your bicycle accident stories!
I locked my bike to a bike stand with one of those cheaper D-locks, and I had the key with me so I thought there would be no problem.
After buying and sorting out some stuff, I headed back to my bike and when I twisted the key inside the lock, the key snapped in two. Grabbing the spare key was pointless as the key lock was jammed with the broken piece was stuck inside, and the bike was stuck to the stand.
Luckily, it was parked near a betting shop (Ladbrokes) and some kind men decided to help me out when one walked all the way to his house to grab a saw, and he cut through the D-lock for me and I was able to ride home. Without them it could've been stuck there for ages, and I would be gutted as I was practically glued to my bike last summer.Last edited by Sparklyblue171; 15-06-2012 at 17:12. -
Re: Share your bicycle accident stories!
SO many near misses, but I'm actually yet to be knocked off! Various attempts by lovely Mancunians to knock me off include
- the classic door opener
- pulling out in front of me
- pulling out from a side road towards my side
- stopping directly in my path to do a parallel parking manoeuvre, and then (as I pause to try and pull out around them into another stream of traffic), they start reversing towards me
- passing with 4" to spare
- Taking a blind bend too fast, on the wrong side of the road
- throwing a stick at me, presumably so they could laugh at me when I fell off (it didn't work) (chavvy children)
- Shouting "boo" into my ear very loud (it was a pedestrian, who got awfully close) in the hope I'd jump and then fall off
- Pedestrians stepping out in front of me without looking (I hit one once)
The only time I've actually ever come off, however, was rather early in my (adult) cycling days. The chain came off, I got a bit confused about what had happened, looked down and went rather off balance. My shoulder and knee hurt, but my pride was hurt even more!

Re: Share your bicycle accident stories!
I once had a shoe lace wrapped around the inside of wheel and it blocked it up and eventually just caused the wheel to stop turning while I was going pretty fast so I flew over the front of the handles, hit the floor pretty hard
then I was sitting on the sidewalk and didn't realize that I had blood coming from my head till I put my hand there
some old lady asked if I wanted to come in for a biscuit, ended up having tea and biscuit with a nice old couple -
Re: Share your bicycle accident stories!
Got chased by a dog the other day - luckily I was starting to go downhill fairly fast, otherwise it probably would have sunk its teeth into my ankles.
All I could see behind me was this barking brown dog running after me, with a middle-aged, middle-class woman running after it shouting "Perry! Perry! Perrrrrrrryyyyy!"
It rather reminded me of

xmas 2010 i went over on some ice and broke my finger cos it got trapped between handlebars and road. barely hurt but had to go to a&e to get it sorted out.

Re: Share your bicycle accident stories!
I was on holiday in Ghana with my family. My uncle brought his bicycle round and I decided to ride it around our holiday home. My mum comes out the house and tells me to be careful before I get hurt (I was riding at a ridiculous speed) then the bike hit a few stones next thing I know, I'm on the ground.

Re: Share your bicycle accident stories!
I have only ever fallen off my bike once, quite proud. I was 8 and cycling around my block while my Dad worked on the car. For some unknown reason I thought it was a good idea to steer into a garage. Glass all in my knee, chunks missing and blood everywhere. Took ages to heal
I have a mahoosive scar on my knee.

Re: Share your bicycle accident stories!
cycling on a road, knocked into a kurb by a car (it was trying to overtake me on an obscured bend, and then a car came in the oncoming lane and it had to avoid it )
Hit the kurb at about 30, and hit the tarmac, stitches in head and friction burn up my leg and back.
My bike isnt that badly damaged but the bike shop are trying to rip me off to repair it I think. -
Riding home from school with a group of friends, I stood on my pedals to look ahead. Still standing up I decided to keep pedalling, so I put my foot down to push the pedal down, missed the pedal & put my foot on the floor. My bike then hit my leg, the bike flipped & I landed in the road.
Thankfully there were no cars coming and I dragged myself & bike onto the pavement. Got a few cuts & bruises, but I was back on my bike the next day

Re: Share your bicycle accident stories!
For some reason I thought it would be a good idea to go no-handed, whilst not sat on the saddle. Obviously it turned out to be impossible, the front wheel buckled almost straight away because I couldn't stop it from turning, I went over the handlebars and scraped my arms, then when I thought it couldn't be any worse, the back end of the bike came down and the bolt holding the back wheel in came crashing down and hit me on the top of my head. Made a real dent in my head a couple of mm deep, was so painful. I was close to home so I thought if I cried louder my parents might hear, but instead there was a girl waiting in her mum's car outside the neighbours house for a flute lesson, and she happened to see me bawling my eyes out while her mum came over to help me up. Very embarrassing
This happened just last week.
Just kidding, I was 8/9. -
Re: Share your bicycle accident stories!
Cycling along (on holiday), went over a bridge, somehow lost control and veered off to one side. Crushed my right hand under one of the barrier-things... it made my little finger go numb and I still have the two scars under my knuckles from when i 'grazed' them.... it was pretty damn nasty at the time.

Re: Share your bicycle accident stories!
was cycling to a friends house whilst on the phone to her asking directions she said first left and me having noticed id just gone past it slammed on the breaks, not a smart move when you only have one hand on the handle bars and its the front break ... i go flying over the top and elbow the tarmac breaking my elbow ... bloody painful -_-

Re: Share your bicycle accident stories!
I was about 11/12, and I rode my bike to the shop and bought a bunch of stuff, put the bag on one side of the handlebars and just sped back home. Halfway down the street the bag made me lose balance and it just went "AHA I'M GONNA MAKE YOU FALL OFF" so I fell off.
And this kid from school saw me and laughed. ;______; -
Re: Share your bicycle accident stories!
I've had a couple...
Most memorable one was when I used to do my paper round in a really hilly area. Was cycling down one hill and my rear wheel locked up. My lasting memory is of seeing the back end of my bike start to slide past my handlebars and thinking, "Oh sheeeeiiiiiiiittttte..." before tumbling over...
Second one was more embarrassing and involved me catching one end of my handlebars in some railings on a traffic island just outside my college. Really loud clang and me on the floor as a whole bus load of my peers laughs.
As a child I have also skidded on gravel and fallen into a pond, as well as going over my handlebars and scraping my face on the floor (again, gravel was involved). Had a whole chin full of butterfly stitches that time.
After reading this back I've realised that I shouldn't be trusted with a bicycle...Last edited by TheWalkinDude; 17-06-2012 at 02:19. Reason: Marvelled at my own stupidity.
