Personal statement with single and joint honours courses
The majority of courses I'm applying for are single honours history (v100). However, I am also considering a joint honours course at the University of Nottingham. It is 'history and ancient history'. Would it be difficult to fit this course into a personal statement which is largely aimed at single honours history?
I think that it would be easier to do than some other joint honours I've seen since it is still related to history. One line about interests in ancient history would be enough I think.
But, I still want some advice on this please.

Don't do it. History is one of the most competitive courses in the country; why should your other 4 choices give you an offer for straight History, when you've also written about Ancient History when you're not applying for Ancient History to your other 4 choices?

It will come off as you not being that interested in a straight History degree at all, prompting them to possibly reject you in favour of somebody else who has only written about straight History in their personal statement. For all each of your other choices know, you have only applied to one straight History course at their university (as they cannot see your other choices), just using them as a back-up if you don't get a potential 4 other offers, all for combined History and Ancient History.

Don't necessarily listen to the guy above. If an of your history courses include ancient history as part of the course (easily checked on the website) then you'll be golden. If not, I would stick it safe and only mention straight history. Then put in a bit about ancient history, and link it back to your love of history in general. Don't focus on ancient history too much. Ancient history is still history, so it's not going to necessarily harm your application, but don't go on about it too much, especially if your history courses don't include any ancient history.

This is great advice. If ancient history is part of the v100 courses, simply use that as a part of history you're particularly interested anyway - you'd do that either way, so that you could show extra research etc you've done in the subject. If they don't do any ancient history in v100, it's less safe, so probably unwise to focus like that.

That's what I thought. Since it is still history, it won't put off others too much and I'd only mention ancient history alittle anyway.

It's difficult. I applied for economics and politics and economics, 4 for 1, 1 for the other. I didn't get an offer for the economics course. Now, this may have been for other reasons but I was a fairly strong candidate. Coincidentally, I've just finished a degree in history and yeah, its competitive, but not especially hard. The difference between history and ancient history isn't massive so your PS should be easier to write.
