TSR apps - how would you improve them?
Thousands of you have been downloading the TSR Android, iPhone and iPad apps over recent weeks and using them to read and post on TSR. The response has been great

Thanks for all your feedback so far, but now you've had a chance to properly use the apps we want more of your ideas and suggestions on how to improve them.
So tell us your top three or so ideas for making the apps better.
You ideas could be fixing bugs, improving parts of the app, including a feature already on the main TSR or something entirely knew.
Let us know your thoughts below and please do encourage others to give us their feedback (and also so download the app if they have not yet done so). -
Re: TSR apps - how would you improve them?
1. Who quoted me
2. Fix Android bug- numbers going green on participated threads even when there aren't new posts
3. First unread option while in thread (a button to click without having to have first unread as the default view)
Xxx

Re: TSR apps - how would you improve them?
Reduced intrusion of the default message added when posting from the app. I do not believe that the short-term gains of increasing the visibility of the apps are worth messing up so many posts (that will remain on the site forever) by having an obnoxious final line that interrupts the flow of conversation and makes threads look terrible.

Re: TSR apps - how would you improve them?
The number one thing I'd like is for latex to be handled better. I appreciate it only has limited use but it is very annoying that all equations get replaced by smileys. Even something as simple as getting the app to ignore [latex] tags and show the equations' code would be preferable.
Otherwise, I really like the app. -

I've just checked on my iPad and the latex is being displayed fine whilst on my Android phone it's displaying the latex code. Are you perhaps using an iphone? I can't get access to one at the moment, but will check latex out on there when I can. -
Re: TSR apps - how would you improve them? It's on an android phone, and the problem is still there after updating to the latest version on google play.(Original post by RK)

Actually, after playing around with it a bit to show you an example, the problem is more interesting than I first thought:
Let's suppose you start with BBCode enabled in the settings, which (I think) is the default.
And if we look at this thread which has lots of latex code in the op: http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/show....php?t=2018089 and when I load it on my phone it comes out looking like:
Spoiler:ShowI want to find the characteristic curves of the wave equation
.
Following the exact same method as the example at the top of page 109 here, I find:
.
The characteristics are given by

.
But, of course, the answer should be instead
.
What stupid thing am I doing wrong?
If you then go to another page in the app, then go to the settings and disable bbcode, then return to that post (it's one of the latest ones in the maths academic help forum) all staying within the app then you get this:
Spoiler:Show
I want to find the characteristic curves of the wave equation<br />

What stupid thing am I doing wrong?
However, if you then close the app and reopen it, then when you go back to that post you get this:
Spoiler:Show
I want to find the characteristic curves of the wave equation [latex]k^2 u_{xx} - u_{tt} = 0[/latex]. Following the exact same method as the example at the top of page 109 here, I find: [latex]a = k^2, b = 0, c = -1[/latex]. The characteristics are given by [latex]\dfrac{\mathrm{d}x}{\mathrm{d}t} = \dfrac{-b \pm \sqrt{b^2 - ac}}{a} = \pm \dfrac{1}{k}[/latex] [latex]\implies x \pm \frac{1}{k} t = \mathrm{constant}[/latex]. But, of course, the answer should be instead [latex]x \pm kt = \mathrm{constant}[/latex]. What stupid thing am I doing wrong?
Which is how I would have preferred latex tags to always be handled. If you then go to the settings and enable BBCode again, then go back to that thread then the appearence of it still stays the same. However if you then close/reopen the app again then the post reverts back to using smileys instead of latex code. -

Re: TSR apps - how would you improve them? You can turn off the signature via the app settings - is that what you're thinking of?(Original post by seasons of wither)
ability to rep and a permanent way to get rid of the signature. great apart from that
-
Found something strange - on http://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/show....php?t=2026669 when I go to edit my post (the third one down) the edit screen strips out everything from the first less than symbol ( < ) onwards

how do I rep a post on my iphone?

Re: Idea to improve quality of TSR postsAgain, not at the moment - but I'm fairly sure that both rep and Who Quoted Me are on the dev list for the app.(Original post by Dream. On)
ok what about a "who quoted me" thing? Is there any way to find out apart from going back to each thread and check? Thankyou

Re: TSR apps - how would you improve them?
Ok, first off, it's great that TSR has done this. I have only just found out about it, as it happens, so I downloaded it a cpl days ago. So it's great to have...
but...
There's a lot wrong with it, I'm afraid. I dare say most of these (if not all) have been raised before, but (and please take them in the spirit of constructive feedback
);
1 can it mirror the experience of the web version more closely? I don't want to be greeted with all the latest posts from anywhere in TSR when I first open the app. I only tend to use a small number of forums/threads; PS Help, Chem study help, maths study help. I'm really not interested in what else goes on in TSR, so having the app open with all the most recent posts (on whatever topic) "What's the right age to start having sex? Does my bum look big in this?" - just doesn't work for me. I would prefer to have the app customizable so I can have it open into what I want ; for example, "watched threads" or WQM
2 repping isn't available, nor can we see rep opr postcounts etc
3 can't see smilies
4 can't turn off the "This was posted from the TSR iPhone/iPad app" message. Someone said this was configurable from "Settings" but it's not on my iPhone. In Settings, I only have ; General, Images, Layout, discussion, post creation (and it's not under any of those)
5 Can't preview posts
That'll do for now
Thanks -

WQM and rep are both on the dev list, I believe. Highly requested features from many people. So hopefully we'll have those before too long. You should be able to see some smilies (I think the most common 50 or so), but not all of them can be/have been added to the app yet.
As for the 'This was posted from..' message, this isn't in the app settings, but in the 'Advanced Settings' you have when you go to post something. On your iPhone it should be between the text box and the keyboard - click where it mentions Advanced Settings and it should expand to take you where you can turn off the 'signature' part

Ok, thanks. I was going by this post, which indicated it was in the app settings(Original post by secretmessages)

So if it's in the "advanced settings" in the post box, does that mean I have to switch it off every time I post/reply? That would be quite annoying.(Original post by Illusionary)
You can turn off the signature via the app settings - is that what you're thinking of?
So what about being able have the app open into your favourite forums? I really don't need to see all the latest posts from Health and Relationships..
