    japanese studies problem
hi, i am applying for 2012 entry,

like a complete div i applied for 4 fine art photography courses and only one Japanese studies. I picked oxford brookes as i could easily pass the entry requirements.

4 months after application i have changed my priorities and definitely want to study Japanese, i have received unconditional from Brookes. However i have heard a lot of negative things about oxford brooks on the forum. i have AAB at a level and an A in a GCSE language, i think i could do better that Oxbrooks with my grades. I'm going to have to go through extra i think. What are your opinions on Oxford Brookes? and what universities have you applied to/ do you like? I want to improve both Japanese language and learn about culture and history, Brookes seemed great but i hear they are slow on the language front, i want a good degree and i'm very worried. I am already taking evening classes and have been doing so for 7 months. I have looked at Newcastle, Manchester, Sheffield and SOAS which do you think is the best?

I would try your luck with SOAS, although it might be difficult to get a place there through extra. Their course would include all the elements you are looking for and you can do a year in Japan too!

    Good Luck.

I don't have an A-level in a language which they said they preffered for the japanese course, im not sure that i would be considered because of that, and the japanese studies doesn't include a year in japan which is important to me :/

...you don't need an A-Level language. They said they preferred it because they want to know your capabilities of learning a language in such a small time, you just need to prove your language capabilities. I got an offer for being multilingual, and wants an AAB (I do Eng. Lang/Lit, Classics and History + AS Bio). Before you begin, they'll test you in the Japanese language (or any language you want to study) based on reading, writing, speaking, listening and translating.

According to them, they're the best in oriental languages. For Japanese, they're the best in the country. (Better than Oxbridge) Though, they have a very high fail rate compared to other unis because of their intensity, that's what's scaring me a little. The only thing I don't like in SOAS is the rooms you'll be taught in; they look horrible.

...I have SOAS as Firm (Jap/Linguistics) and Brookes for Insurance (Jap/Comp. Sci).

I thoroughly enjoy my course at Brookes, but if you can get SOAS then why not?? But I have also heard it's very high intensity... Go on any Uni thread on TSR and they will all say bad things, you should realise that it's the people who don't enjoy their course that come on-line to post bad things, the other people are too busy enjoying themselves!

I applied for Brookes because it had everything I wanted, a year abroad especially, I went with ZERO knowledge of Japanese Hope this helps.
