The cheapest way to travel in the UK
Hi guys!
Here again because i was wondering what is the cheapest way to travel in the UK. I'm a French student, and i'll be staying at NTU for only 1 semester, but if by any chance some student cards, or special tariffs applying to students exist, i'd like to know about
(also, do not hesitate to make looong list about which place to visit and which place not to visit
)
Thanks guys!

Re: The cheapest way to travel in the UK
Coaches provided by MegaBus (Stagecoach) or National Express are the cheapest but also the slowest. Rails is quicker but much more expensive. To give you an idea, it's cheaper to get a flight from Manchester to Southampton than to get train with just a one-way ticket.

Re: The cheapest way to travel in the UKI just had a look on thetrainline.com, and you can get an advance single from Manchester Piccadilly to Southampton Central for £24.40, with a young person's railcard. Can you really get a flight for less than that? I'll grant you that if you turn up on the day and buy a ticket in the station that it would cost a lot more (or even if you want a non-advance ticket) but the point is it is possible to get fairly reasonable train fares if you book enough in advance and can get the specified train.(Original post by scbond)

Re: The cheapest way to travel in the UK
You can find absolute gems on trainline.com just as you can with any site like that on the net I suppose though. I mean, I've seen plenty of prices on that site which are higher than National Rail's site for the very same train so I guess sometimes you get a deal and sometimes you don't.

Re: The cheapest way to travel in the UK
For trains I usually buy off thetrainline.com. If you buy advanced singles you can get cheap journeys sometimes but obviously then you have to make sure you definitely catch that train otherwise you have to buy a new ticket. I'd recommend getting a 16-25 young persons railcard as it gives you 30% off I think, and is definitely worth it... oh and if you buy a meal at pizza express they give you a voucher so you can get 20% off the cost of a railcard
