Need some Law books to enhance my PS
To show that I'm interested in the subjects and prepared to read outside it I want to find some good law books to give me a basic understanding of the subject. Apart from some general things, and a few taster lessons i'm a noob though.
I'm after books which if I read and perhaps could discuss with the University, would impress them and also enhance my general understanding of it.
I'm not looking for a textbook but something interesting, perhaps with a stotyline if they exist.
Please recommend me some books, how it's narrated and what it's about.
Thanks TSR

Is a PS not an opportunity to show why you want to study rather than an opportunity to show your knowledge of what you are going to study? :/
It shows you have interest in the subject.

Re: Need some Law books to enhance my PS
The one that always comes up is Letters to a Law Student by McBride- which is generally advisory to a student on what to expect. Similarly, I think you can do a lot worse than reading The Legal System by Kate Malleson - puts in to context where everything goes and which courts do what. You don't want to be that guy still sitting in the lecture in January too frightened to mention that you still don't know what the common law is.
The heavy books like Dworkin and Hart won't mean anything to you yet, neither will the texts - worse, you risk misunderstanding the concepts.
I've heard a lot of people say good things about The Justice Game by Geoffrey Robertson QC and The Law Machine by Berlins & Dyer. -
Re: Need some Law books to enhance my PSI wouldn't recommend any jurisprudence books unless they have read a fair bit of philosophy. Even then, jurisprudence often does not integrate with political philosophy as much as perhaps those with a philosophy background would perhaps expect.(Original post by Clip)

OP, may be a cheap old edition of Clarkson & Keating Criminal Law: Text and Materials? One edition I have has stuff on what ought to be criminal etc which may be more interesting that the actual mechanics of the criminal law. -

There's a similar thread here

Letters to a Law Student is definitely a helpful introduction to what studying law at university is like.
I also recommended Understanding Criminal Law by Clarkson will help you get thinking about things like why we have criminal law in the first place. -
Re: Need some Law books to enhance my PSYou want to show that you're interested in your subject and part of that will include writing about what steps you've taken to further that interest, e.g. work experience or books that you've read. Being able to say that you're really interested in legal area X shows that you are interested, provides a basis for that interest, and demonstrates academic commitment.(Original post by Zedd)
