Re: Mitosis- GCSE biology Help please !!!
Before a cell undergoes mitosis, DNA replication occurs in which each strand copies it self. Therefore, there is double the DNA.
Mitosis occurs in the following steps:
Interphase - this is where the DNA replication occurs
Prophase - this is where the chromosomes pair up and condense becoming shorter and fatter and visible under a microscope.
Metaphase - the homologous chromosomes line up along the equator of the cells and spindles attach
Anaphase - the chromatids are pulled to opposite poles of the cell
Telphase - the chromatids are collected at opposite ends of the cell. The nuclear membrane forms around the chromatids and the cells separate -
Re: Mitosis- GCSE biology Help please !!!thanks very much man, but can you tell me how many Chromosomes there are after the replication and just before the prophase occurs???(Original post by seventyfourable)

Re: Mitosis- GCSE biology Help please !!!Technically speaking, the number of chromosomes stay the same since a chromosome that has duplicated it's genetic content is attached to the other copy - When DNA condences in Prophase it's the classic picture of a chromosome and looks like an "X". It's just the way we define a Chromosome.(Original post by Qiness)

When cells duplicates its content does it mean there is 46 pair after the 23 original pair duplicates its content???
