University of York - Night life!
(I've firmed York for this years entry -2012)

Okay so I've heard conflicting views about the night life at York. I like a good night out I won't lie! I like good clubs (not the boring quiet pubs with old men singing and playing a 100 year old guitar) with a nice atomsphere. I'm aware that Leeds has good clubs down the road so I'm holding on to that if York doesn't go too well!

Also, I'm slightly worried that I might be abit too 'common' for everyone when I go York aha! I speak like a chav and my grades come from sheer hard work rather than natural intelligence. I hate to stereotype but I'm not sure if the type of people who attend York Uni would get on with me? I'm a joker and love dishing out banter...

Oh and what college would suit me best do you think? I don't want a quiet college aha! Is there any college with a reputation for being very social?

Any input about the university would be welcomed too

    Thanks!

Night life at York is what you make it, but I've had a great time this year and some BIG nights out. I know loads of people who sad they'd go to Leeds for nights out and zero people who have actually ended up feeling the need.

You sound like you'd like Derwent, as far as colleges go.

I've had a great time with the nightlife here! As sentiment said above, it is what you make of it. If you're a sociable person, you won't have a problem. Practically every night has a club night and there are always events and 'big nights out'.
Derwent has a reputation for being the most sociable college, but I'm in James and absolutely love it.
Also, don't worry about being 'too common'. There is a massive range of people here that you're bound to find people you get along with. In my group of friends there is a mix of backgrounds anyway!

I honestly could've written that post! I'm sure we'll both be fine, Derwent seems like the most sociable college from what I've heard.

Glad I'm not the only one!

I'm after a self-catered ensuite and the only ones in Derwent say "There will be a mixture of under-graduates and post-graduates living in these blocks, so residents in this area need to be considerate of their neighbours and keep noise to a minimum" Ermmmmm... hahaha!

Have on good authority that York is a good night out, but with loads of pubs as opposed to clubs, but it still has clubs. And there are trains to and from Leeds that run hourly through the night! 24hrs.

Common, Ha! No such thing. You cannot help how you talk, for example i get called poshboy at work, but throughout my teens i was in a single parent family who relied on dole money and dinner tickets. So what? But im still posh according to some.

Not really a believer in natural intelligence, you brain is a sponge and you only really become intelligent by ready and working hard. Which you have done.

I too love banter, as presumably does everyone who doesn't had a red hot poker up their jacksy.

Oooh, that'd put me right off! I'm going standard catered I think, I'm not fussed about sharing a bathroom at all and apparently that's the part with the best atmosphere. What're you studying (:

York is not snobby at all so don't worry you'll fit in.

Derwent is a decent college, though the accommodation is a bit old. You'll find friends wherever you go.

As for pubs there's loads of good ones. Guy Fawkes inn, lion and lamb, beeswing, black bull, charles+deramore, old white swan, house of trembling madness amongst many many others.

I've only seen Goodricke accommodation and obviously that's beaaautiful! Hmm! Thanks for the info on the pubs though I've been York a few times and all the pubs are so cute and cosy aha!

Looking at the prices of catered/self-catered, the difference is like £6 per week.. Catered is worth that I think! Idk, first come first serve anyway so I'll see what I get landed with ahaha!

You seem a lot like me. I really am scared that people won't understand my Welsh accent up there as it's really strong.

    What have you firmed for?

My best friend at York is Welsh

After you get your offers. They go out in batches, so all the ensuites won't be snapped up early.

Good to have you coming to York. We need defenders of the humanities like you've been doing

This thread has reassured me about York so hopefully we'll be fine haha! & As for your accent, there'll be loads of different accents floating about so you shouldn't worry! And if people won't be able to understand you, you'll have to just hold a whiteboard up

    Management What about you?

that's what swayed me, there's no way I could do a food shop for less than £6 so it works out cheaper. I think places like Alcuin/James with their fancy ensuites go first, Derwent should be fairly easy, I hope
