I have looked in my settings for the option to have an avatar display beneath my username and no such choice exists - I have emailed support with absolutely no reply. Some people do have an avatar, how do you get one?

Here we are. Under photos and files on my TSR there should be Avatar.

One would expect it along with 'Edit Profile', but it is below Settings->Photos & Files -> Edit Avatar, that is why you missed it.
