Jewelry making allergiesFor one of my friends birthday's I decided to make her a bunch of earrings. She didn't want any bracelets and I have no idea what kind of necklaces she likes (I never see her wear them so I think I stayed safe not making her one)
However when I gave them to her, she pushed them away saying she is allergic to anything but pure silver. I feel really silly now not enquiring about allergies to metals.
I did some looking up on where I got the pieces from and found that the earring findings I used are silver plated, and from another friends experience with sensitive ears she says that she has never had a problem with the earring findings I used.
Will this make them safe for her to wear? -

Re: Jewelry making allergiesi am allergic to even pure silver and can't wear anything below 18 carat gold (i know wierd) it makes my ears bleed and skin peel (nice). i'd advice sticking to exactly what she has told you, to be on the safe side, as if she has an allergic reaction it can be painful and can last long after the earrings are removed. If you can't afford pure silver earrings, i suggest finding a different gift (annoying, i know).
Or better still, just ask her. -

Just googled it to find a random picture and this is EXACTLY what happens to me!

If someone says they're allergic to something, I really wouldn't risk it! Can be very painful/sore on their behalf! -

Not necessarily, the girl said pure silver only, don't be a cheap skate and buy the real deal.
This was exactly what I wanted to know, I have tried looking up articles on this and they are all 50/50 it seems logical to think the silver plating will wear off but some swear that it never will.(Original post by EpicPenguin)
No - the plating can wear off with time, exposing the metal underneath which your friend is likely allergic to.

As I mentioned above, I gave them to her to keep a hold of (I know I'll lose them) and I'll change them over when I can afford the correct findings.

Re: Jewelry making allergiesEvery people have some allergy so you have to choose your skin suitable jewelry. I also suffer this problem I can't wear imitation jewelry its not suit to my skin so I always prefer gold jewelry. You also choose some nice jewelry which is not affected to your skin.
