    Save the Arctic
Anyone else read about the new Greenpeace campaign and petition to get 1,000,000 signatures to make the Arctic into a protected environment?

What are your opinions on this?

I think it is one of the most important environmental issues we currently have, since Russia have already started staking a claim and it’s not even a viable resource yet!

While I am all for environmental issues Greenpeace deserve no respect whatsoever.

Out of curiosity, what is your reasoning for this?

    Greenpeace's claims are often over-exaggerated.

I have already signed it, but I understand Serano's opinion. I just feel that the issue is more important than the people backing it. Yes Greenpeace can be extreme in some situations but it also gives them the publicity to bring something like this to the wider public.

    No.

We are still coming out of an ice age. The world is supposed to be warming up. We are supposed to get rid of polar caps. All humans have done is speed the process up a bit (lot).

It's like saying we should prevent longshore drift, coastal erosion or mountain ranges. The Himalayas are still growing. Should we stop that from happening? Where do we draw the line between acceptable natre and unacceptable nature?

This is how I see Greenpeace. Things need to be done about environmental situations but they do sometimes do it in a way in which it can be done better and more effectively.

I was not aware of the campaign but because I believe that it is an important environment that it vulnerable and needs saving I am going to sign it.

If you look on their website however it is more than just to stop them melting. It is to stop the drilling for oil which is taking place, industrial fishing and conflict. These are serious problems and are things that we can prevent to stop making the situation worse. This is an important habitat and environment for many species which are not found anywhere else. We are destroying them in these ways and it is things like this which should be prevented.

What they want is to impose something like the Antarctic Treaty. This could protect the fragile environment as Tabers said, but I think it may also help prevent another war!

If you look at a map of the Arctic, there is more then just Russia (who have staked their claim to it already). If it came to it, does anyone really believe America and Canada will really just stand by and let them claim any oil there?
