Why are gamers so concerned about their "stats"?
PC and console games, online gaming, CS clans and minesweeper.

Why are gamers so concerned about their "stats"?
I noticed a while ago that on a game, people judge you by how good you are at it. I noticed that you probably don't want inexperienced players in your clan or whatever but some people act as if the game was real life. They treat you like a little kid if you're low leveled and respect you if you're higher. Is this really what today's generation has turned to?

It really depends on the game. CoD is particularly bad because the entire game is based around an incredibly simple process or point and click "reflex" shooting so most of the variety of the game comes in customisation which naturally includes personal gameplay stats.

Re: Why are gamers so concerned about their "stats"?
It's just a way people try to gauge how good they are against each other. However, as in the extreme case of Call of Duty players, this is taken too far and the game becomes tainted by lowlifes who "camp" and effectively ruin the game for those who want to play for enjoyment, not to turn a corner for someone to kill them with no skill involved.
I would just like to add, however, to try and avoid some sarcy back-comment that i am a competitive player, i do play to win and i hate losing (as we all do) but i don't resort to petty techniques like this and i am actually skilled at the shooter genre.
Mini-rant at campers over.

It makes people happy when they do well at a game consistently. But I do think people should relax on their obsession with stats. I remember when I could never find the leaderboards on games... it was beautifiul

However...
If you play for 'fun' you're bad. If you play for stats and are still bad you're really bad. If you play for fun and are good, then you're lying. If you play for stats and you're good, then you have no life. -
War is hell. You do what you have to to stay alive. Just deal with it. Campers ain't hard to beat.(Original post by JamesR1993)

Me? I stopped caring about CoD stats a while ago. I don't really play it much now.
Lap times on Forza and F1 are an entirely different matter. -
Re: Why are gamers so concerned about their "stats"?Yes, i understand that for a REAL war, but in a game that even the most hardcore of gamers can't say it's real is a tad sad. Soaks the fun out of a game.(Original post by mikeyd85)

Does anyone else hate it when there's an MP-5 guy on the other team killing you right when you had your crosshair on his head.. -
Re: Why are gamers so concerned about their "stats"?
If you're in a competitive environment, how you do is by definition important. Looking down on people isn't necessary and, I think, occurs due to anonymity online, but in any pursuit where performance matters (a lot of sports, for example) people who are really good will have their experience negatively impacted by the presence of unskilled players (and vice versa, more often than not) - imagine a pro cycling team trying to train when they keep having to stop and wait for some unfit guy to catch up with them. This is why a lot of multiplayer games feature ranking systems and matchmake players with others of similar skill.
It's not about skill being a virtue in and of itself - in single player games, or games where you have no potential to negatively impact other players, you won't find much unpleasantness directed at poor or new players from those better and more experienced. -
