Is this legal?!?!?
ok so I'm in the last month of my tenancy at a house and moved most of my stuff out, however I did leave some things there as it couldnt all fit into the car, I had a month left on so thought it wouldnt be a problem.
I also havnt paid the rent yet for that month, but am up to date with everything else and told the landlord that I was going to be paying the rent late.
while I'v been gone the landlord has let himself into the house (everyone else has moved out) then let himself into my room (which was also locked) and thrown all of my things away. Now he is trying to charge me extra for 'cleaning' my room and not returning the keys. The tenancy agreement doesnt end until the 26th of June and this happened 2 weeks ago.
I keep getting mixed advice about this. basically coz I wasnt up to date with my rent he is allowed to do this which doesnt seem right. He has also said I can go there and look through the bin bags for my stuff but this seems ridiculous.
What do you think? -
Re: Is this legal?!?!?
I'm no expert on this but I think he may have a right to do that, especially if you haven't paid the rent on time. He probably assumes that you have moved out (and that your tenancy has ended) which is why he's throwing things away and trying to charge you extra. Did you let him know that you were moving out/had to leave some things and would get them later?

Re: Is this legal?!?!?No i didnt tell him I was moving out because I didnt think I had to. They only way he could have known all my stuff wasnt in my room was if he let himself into the room, which he shouldnt be doing anyway.(Original post by hannah_dru)

Im not realy sure where this stands but I hadnt moved out yet so technically I feel like he's evicted me. -
Re: Is this legal?!?!?I think you would've had to have told him as he obviously does think you've gone completely. Technically he can let himself in but he should've given you notice. Some landlords ignore that though.(Original post by Yake-o)

Re: Is this legal?!?!?
when you told him the payment would be a month late did he agree to this? if he agreed then what he has done is totally wrong.
but if he didnt agree then i still think its illegal.
For example, i know someone who haspnt paid their rent for 6 months now and the landlord is trying to get them kicked out (but sadly courts are easier said than done). And this landlord isnt even allowed to enter the property still without their being good reason!! its ridiculous
