Re: any UCL SSEES offer holder?
hi
,
I'm coming to SSEES Politics and East European Studies (as an Erasmus student from Croatia) in January 2013.
Any experiences with some of these courses:
History of European Political Ideas
Politics and Society in Central and Eastern Europe
Understanding Society: Introduction to Political Sociology
Foundation Russian (beginners) -
Re: UCL SSEES - MA HistoryHey,(Original post by jetb1990)
I have an offer for Central and Eastern European Studies at the UCL SSEES department starting in september 2012. I suppose some of the modules will overlap? I was between the history course and the one i chose!
nice to meet you
yeah I imagine the modules will probably overlap, as I think your course would be quite interdisplinary, covering different subjects e.g. literature, history etc. are there any modules/courses that you think might be interesting? are you also on facebook by any chance? would be great to chat to you further

Re: UCL SSEES - MA History
Nice to meet you too.
I do have Facebook - my name is jess breadman. Sometimes people can't find me but i am there...
I went into london today, flat searching with my friend! Ended up wandering the Bloomsbury campus and went to see the SSEES dept - looks amazing from the entrance hall, we couldn't actually get any further, ha! I'm keen on modules on the balkans - I wrote my dissertation on the supposed "ethnic hatreds" amongst the South Slavs; also on Russian culture and history. I already take Russian language so i'd like to further that and take on another Slavic language. What about you? Any particular interests? -

I'm glad you had a chance to see the department. Haven't managed to go just yet, as I am still waiting for response from UCL SSEES. do you know if there might be any open days at any point, or do you currently have to organise them with the dept? As I am currently in my third year at uni, and have deferred some of my work, it means I willl receive my overall degree classification at a later date than usual (it would normally be July) - my uni said probably around sept. I rang SSEES admissions up and they said that it all depends if they are able to receive my results by the start of the course date. So am keeping my fingers crossed, as I really would like to move into the field of Eastern European History, and this would be a natural place to go. lol it seems our interests are very similar - - although I generally like East European History more broadly, I have interests in Soviet and Russian History, particularly the period with Lenin and Stalin, and the history of the Balkans e.g. Yugoslavia etc ( I studied a module on the former Yugoslavia in my 3rd year of my undergraduate degree at uni this year, and so I kind of would like to develop this further), but a very fascinating area that I would like to explore is Romanian History, perhaps something like the Holocaust in Romania. More specific issues that I like to study/explore is the history of inter-war Fascism. As I would like to go into historical research at some point, I also have a passion for learning languages, which is another reason why I chose SSEES, as I know they have language lessons and that. I would really like to learn German, Russian and Romanian (not at same time together, but in the future at different times) possibly with the SSEES. I have been trying to teach myself at the moment bits of romanian and russian langauge - they're both quite fascinating. I think romanian is easier out of the two as its a latin script, bit like Italian. as you take russian already, how have you found learning cyrillic script, as I have been recently trying to learn the different letters of the alphabet? It's interesting you mention that you did your dissertation on the 'ethnic hatreds' of South Slavs, as that was a key issue underpinning my Yugoslavia course I studied this year, particularly where we came to latter part of the course (e.g. as we studied about the collapse of yugoslavia, and the war in Bosnia). but anyways thanks also, I will add you on facebook - will probably speak to you more on there.

Re: UCL SSEES - MA History
yer that was my dissertation basically - media sources claimed there were ethnic hatreds deep rooted in balkan history so i just sort of looked into the history of the region and then the compatibility, as it were, of yugo. I went there last aug/sept as well around a couple of the countries and spoke to people! What was your diss on? More than happy to read your PS - Im flying to india on saturday though so send soon - on fb. Russian is easy to learn if you actually take a class/module - i already knew the greek alphabet and there are (minimal, but rewarding) similarities in the way latin letters can be used. I speak french too (i did my 3rd year placement working in france) and find a lot of Russian words are the same as french! I first became interested when i read a clockwork orange - if you haven't read it, do! I suppose i would be able to link my two interests through romanian. Did you know much italian before you started learning?
Cool to chat to someone who is interested in the same things as I am! Do send away your PS as we're now friends on Facebook. -
