Thinking of applying to the University of Cumbria.........
    Hi,
I am thinking of applying to the University of Cumbria for a teacher training course. I am a mature student (31) and worried as I don't have the required A-Level marks. I almost finished a degree but had to leave due to personal circumstances. Any mature students who applied with any advice?

The best thing to do would just be to have a chat with the university admissions staff. Good luck.

Speak to the university and see what they have to say, they will more than likely take into account things like your previous university experience and wider life experience beyond just A level grades. They'll know that you took your A levels over 10 years ago so the examination structure has changed since then. Typical offers have also changed a lot over that period - there are universities now demanding AAA from A level students who would have been happy to take BBC or lower several years ago. They'll take all of this into account.

What they will not be able to ignore though is the GCSE requirements - you must have a C or above in maths, English language and science to become a primary school teacher and this is set by law. They are quite literally unable to accept you if you do not meet those requirements, whereas A level requirements are less strict as there aren't any specific A level requirements set by government for entering teacher training.

Thanks! They have an open day at the London campus (I'd want to study at the Lancaster campus). Do you think they have the same application process and rules? I'm tempted to go and speak to them about the course and get a feel for whether I'm way off the mark!!

    Hi,

I'm a mature student at UoC at the moment. I also did not have the required A-Level marks to get onto the course. UoC (especially the London campus) has a lot of mature students who did not necessarily get the A-Level grades needed. I would phone up and speak to the admin team, but as long as you have the required/equivalent GCSEs, I don't think there will be anything stopping you applying for the course.

    Hope this helps!!
