I am worried about my writing style in an exam context
Hey everyone!
I hope to make this as brief as possible for everyone! Thank you in advance for taking your time to read this!
I am very academically interested in economics, I regularly read publications such as the classic Economist newspaper, the FT as well as published academic papers and books in a variety of economic and finance-related fields. I have written research based essays for my own effective digestion of information as well as for essay writing competitions.
But here is my problem: I sat my economics A2 today and i am concerned about my writing style.
I find it impossible to recall and structure a list of facts in response to an essay question. I must write in a journalistic style in order to coherently structure and recall a flow of ideas.
Specifically, I am enthusiastic and am concerned that I may have gone a little overboard. In response to one of the questions I included: "the existance of reward for increased productivity in a Capitalist structure, in conjunction with Adam Smith's invisible hand, creates incentives for people to work harder or more productively, and without reward, there would be no incentive (unless it is a Soviet doctrine).
I am only particularly concerned about what I put in brackets at the end in that instance. It is not particularly relevant.
Further along I recall writing this: "As can be seen from contemporary economic affairs such as the Greek credit default, it is often the fault of the debtor for not being able to repay, thus it would be more effective to ensure responsible lending to responsible governments along with external surveillance" [concerning debt cancellation in African countries].
At one point, I started a response with "there is irony in the question as..." (which to my defence, there was!) and I promptly reconsidered this and crossed it out with three lines, although it is still legible if closely observed.
It really is simply because of the writing styles I have grown accustomed to reading over the years, not because I feel that I am particularly arrogant or special that I write like that.
So now down to the point:
Will this be a positive addition to my exam paper in terms of being a little more vibrant in style than would be expected
OR
Will this perhaps offend/annoy an examiner because it may come across as an arrogant writing style and perhaps make me lose marks?
Thank you again! Have a lovely evening!Last edited by plan_up_sleeve; 20-06-2012 at 20:10. Reason: typos/grammar -
