I simply have a lot of work to do in the internship and my best mate has been wanting to meet up for drinks and i initially said yes but i really underestimated how long my working hours are.

I don't want to leave London without seeing him but i feel like i'm being a **** friend since i did promise. How should i explain this to him?

Just explain exactly as you did here...if he's a good friend he should understand! Give him a call and you can catch up over the phone instead of meeting up, sometimes phone calls are just as good.

I know its hard to say no (I have the exact same problem) but try and work on your assertiveness. People are less likely to take advantage of you in general if they know you won't take it (not relevant to this problem but in general).
