Re: How difficult is an Economics degree and is it worth pursuing
i know a few people doing it, and i'm doing it next year. i can't wait - though apparently it's not a lot like A Level. but the majority of people who do Economics seem outgoing and sociable, even at the very top unis, so I wouldn't let the amount of work put you off

Re: How difficult is an Economics degree and is it worth pursuing
University economics is nothing like A-Level Economics. If you enjoy A-Level Economics and are doing it at university because you think it will be in some way similar, you're in for a major let down. That said, economics at university is worth pursuing for career prospects, and it is a challenging but rewarding degree (given you choose the right modules).
The major difference at university is that it becomes far more abstract in that you learn lots of models without actually seeing the application in the real world. You will cover growth models or trade models, but not see how they are implemented in real life. The only real chance you get is if you do something in your dissertation that is of an applied nature. Otherwise, the major difference is also how university is far more mathematical when compared to A-Level; although maths is used as a tool, so you're using mathematical techniques to problem solve as opposed to understanding the underlying mathematical theory. (That is, unless you cover theoretical econometrics which is mathematical statistics.) -

Better learn Lagrangian's.
1st year: much harder version of A levels. (at least for me it was, some people said theirs wasnt that much harder than a level). in the sense you cover more in 1 year than u did in 2. the questions will be harder, you will go in more depths (usually without maths yet). then you will usually do maths and stats - not everybody's thing.
2nd year: micro will rape you. as i said, better learn Lagrangian's now. econometrics will rape you. unless you are very good at maths / ur unis micro/metrics courses arent that tough. macro will depend. i was frustrated by the lack of relevance to the real world in some parts of my course. you have to understand every model is just an approximation of the real world, and they are all wrong. you want a model that is as simple as possible while being as close as possible to reality. the growth part of macro was fun though.
3rd year: usually options. should be fun. just pick the right modules (content/lecturer). -
Re: How difficult is an Economics degree and is it worth pursuingThis, I've just changed to maths because I hated it, even though I liked it at A-level. Modules in accountancy and business were just the most boring things ever, I already knew all the maths, the micro was easy and the macro was ridiculously hard. I'd got bored and given up by February.(Original post by .ACS.)
