Dell XPS 15 too hot?
Hey, I've had my dell XPS 15 for about 7 months now, the specs are : Intel core i7 2670QM @ 2.2Ghz, 6GB RAM, and nvidia 2GB GT 540M graphics. I've noticed recently the fan seems to be constantly on, pretty much full blast too. I know it's going to get hot because it's a powerful laptop but after looking at the results in speedFan I'm a bit worried. I also have my laptop connected to a 23" 1080p computer monitor and have the laptop lid shut so the laptop screen isn't on. This is also worrying me as the left side of the laptop gets pretty hot and it's pretty much touching the laptop screen so I'm scared it might damage it! Can anyone share their temps/ opinion on this? Thanks!
Here are some pictures:
With the monitor attached running idle.
running chrome, notepad++, putty.
I've also read a bit online about dell using crap thermal paste, so I'm thinking maybe call out a dell technician and ask them to put some artic silver paste on the CPU? -
Re: Dell XPS 15 too hot?Okay those temps are high(Original post by burgergetsbored)

On my desktop I get 30-40 idle and 60-70 when playing Crysis on max
Even using stress tests (which max out the components) I only just reach 90
I doubt they'll be able to put paste on a laptop as I'm fairly sure one does not simply take out the CPU, but I suppose there's no harm in checking with them. Ohhh just read your post fully... keeping the laptop closed is your problem. Loads of heat is dissipated through the keyboard and stuff, so by closing it you're creating a furnace
Just keep it open and see what happens. I know that with my laptop if I keep it closed it burns right up. Once I put it in my rucksack without turning it off - half an hour later when I took it out it was literally scalding hot.

Re: Dell XPS 15 too hot?Damn that's a nuisance because I have it infront of my monitor which it's plugged into as I have no room on the desk for it! It's going to have to sit on the bed with the keyboard open (I know not an ideal situation :L) Could do with comparing with someone who has laptop results as I know desktop ones are going to be miles lower to begin with :L(Original post by Junaid96)

Yeahh if you open a laptop there is normally screws around the heatsink/fan so you can remove it from the processor and apply more thermal paste to the CPU, I'd just rather a dell technician do it rather than me
I've had the lid open for a while and disconnected from the monitor, I'm getting average of 55Degrees with just this browser open with 10 odd tabs. Bit better ! -
Re: Dell XPS 15 too hot?Seems quite normal for a laptop.(Original post by burgergetsbored)

But do be honest, you couldn't really call them out, if they do it, they'll charge an extortion amount, it's simple, just open it up and remove the heatsink. Clean the old paste off and put a dotted amount on and stick back on.
But also it has to do with ventilation underneath the laptop, as well as when you put the laptop on load, temps increase, etc.
Maybe also consider a cooling pad? -
Re: Dell XPS 15 too hot?
95c Normal for a laptop??
OP I actually have an xps 15 with i7 and am very conscious of the high temps, but I'm inclined to agree with the post above about closing the laptop. Because even when running chrome with 5+ tabs, skype and eclipse, the highest mine has reached is low 80s and that itself is rare.
Usually runs low 60s idle like yours, or mid to upper 70s with mid-intensity usage. -
Re: Dell XPS 15 too hot?I've had the lid open since posting this thread and I absolutely agree, the laptop itself feels a lot cooler but speedfan is still reporting 55-70ish temps with just this browser open, it seems to be fluctuating pretty quickly too! One second it'll be 55 and literally one second later it can jump up to 59 ish(Original post by Arturo Bandini)

I've just bought a cooling pad to hopefully pull another 5odd degrees away and save this damn fan a bit of spinning! I've also looked online about closing the lid and many people say it shouldn't be a problem and they've had a laptop 2 off years doing it and it never gets hot. Guess it depends on the model? -
Re: Dell XPS 15 too hot?luckily I've got extended next day warranty so all I'd have to say is it's having heating problems and they'd have to send someone out for free, then I can just ask him to replace the paste while he has it open :L If I were to do it myself, since it involves removing the keyboard if I break it I void my warrenty, whereas if they can do it for free why not!(Original post by Iqbal007)

Just bought a cooling pad from amazon, got pretty good reviews so I'll see how that helps next week when it arrives.Last edited by burgergetsbored; 27-06-2012 at 22:15. -
Re: Dell XPS 15 too hot?Ok well, ask him and make sure you get a good thermal paste, and make sure the person adds a bit and not too much.(Original post by burgergetsbored)

Re: Dell XPS 15 too hot?yeah can't be any harm in at least trying to get one out, and yeah I've got some artic silver 5 paste here so I'll ask him to use that rather than dells cheap paste :L(Original post by Iqbal007)
