Tom Cruise is not very goodHe just seems to try to get by on what he would probably regard as intense charm. He has never actually charmed me either in interviews or on screen. He's never been an iconic romantic lead like Patrick Swayze or Richard Gere, he's never given Jack Nicholson or Johnny Depp a run for his money in eccentric roles, he's never been greatly comic. If Michael J Fox (who is great) had decided to do psychotherapy, a smattering of art films (Eye Wide Shut, possibly his best performance) and cut out all the laughs then you'd have Tom Cruise. He's just a beige presence in cinema for me- if you cut out all his films you'd still have other people filling in every single blank.
