Is what I'm doing okay to get fitter?
I'm currently really unfit. I do a quite of bit of hill walking with the bf, and only started because of him, but it's becoming really embarrassing when I need to stop a million times to catch my breath as we go up a hill. So I want to increase my stamina.
I'm currently doing 8 mins on the treadmill on a sort of slow jog pace.
5 mins on the cross trainer (that thing kills me, 5 mins is even hard).
10 mins on cycles.
15 mins back on treadmill on highest incline doing a steady walk.
I'm a little bit gym clueless. I just want to get fitter for hills! I have three months membership and I try to go everyday, so I'm going to be really annoyed if when I go walking in three months time there is no difference!
Oh and I should add, I know 40ish mins isn't that long to spend at the gym. I try to stay as long as I can but often find by the time I've done the above I feel dead and want to collapse. My legs literally turn to jelly :/Last edited by Airfairy; 29-06-2012 at 10:47. -
Re: Is what I'm doing okay to get fitter?Get outside and find some hills! Depending where you live this might be hard, but actually going outside and doing your walks has a few benefits:(Original post by Airfairy)

You can vary the scenery
If you walk out in a loop then theres no chance of cutting short the walk because your tired
Longer walks on the flat will also help; try and progress the total ammount of time spent on your feet by a small ammount every week.
As you progress you may even want to consider throwing in some walk/jog combinations.
Hill walking is an awesome thing to do though, so im sure if you stick at it you'll reap the rewards

Re: Is what I'm doing okay to get fitter?
Run outside and lift weights. You will get generally fitter but you won't look that much better unless you lift. Running outside is more intense and fun than in the gym anyway, the only times I run in the gym are when I've just finished weights since it's convenient.

Re: Is what I'm doing okay to get fitter?
Thank you for the replies. Sorry for a late reply, I haven't had a laptop. Anyway, I don't know what a jacobs ladder is. I know it's easy enough to find a hill and walk up and down it but I seem to have more motivation to go to the gym that I do to actually tackle a real hill...
Maybe I'll start that couch to 5k thing, as that seems to get people fitter.
