    Best time for applying to jobs @ Uni?
    Hey,

    I've just finished 1st year and am becoming increasingly poor over the summer as the job I have at home is unable to give me many shifts.

    Anyway, the best thing would be for me to get a job in my Uni town, but when would people advise applying? I was going to go back late september and spend the week before freshers (ideally) getting my CV looked at by the Careers people and handing out my CV/applying for jobs before the influx of Freshers start applying mid-October after they're burnt all their money in Fresher's Week.

    Good idea? Or does it really not make a difference?

    Definitely a good idea to get your applications out early. If possible, send out applications online in August and, if you can, state you're available to start work the mid/end of September.

    The earlier the better really, as a lot of people will have the same idea so you're going to be faced with more and more competition as the time goes on.

    Thanks =]

    I'm applying for jobs now - figure I can technically work over summer even if I don't want to...

    I would say go back in September because places will be looking for christmas temps, a lot of the ''locals'' will be heading back to uni and the freshers haven't arrived yet. This is exactly what i'm telling my friends who are looking for work next year.

    As for the best time i think that depends on what your uni city is like, for example i'm in Reading which is quite an affluent area and i didn't find it hard getting interviews (and this is with no experience except volunteering). Me and my flatmate got our jobs in January and i was always told that was the worst time to apply!

    Mid-October seems good as you have to wait for your timetable first as well as getting your cv checked.

    Hah, really? Small world What halls did you stay in last year?

    I work at Next in the city centre, who seem to be recruiting quite a lot, but i also had interviews for a few other places. I'm guessing luck had a lot to do with it, as i had no experience of paid work. I put a lot of emphasis on transferrable skills and volunteering because well, thats all i had.

    The students union will be recruiting more staff at some point over the summer, definitely try for that when it opens. Broadbase Events are another good one, they'll take virtually anyone. I'm doing some work with them for the Olympics with a few friends from halls. They're a bit dodgy in my opinion, but money is money. I've been helping one of my friends try and find a job lately, and there is a suprisingly high amount of vacancies around. If there isn't a careers service in your hometown, get a friend to check your CV, or even the CV people on here are supposedly quite good. I'll probably stick mine up for review once its updated.

    All i can say is good luck! I know how hard and frustrating it is, just don't give up.

    Mackinder =]
    I've actually already had one interview for the SU and they declined me, but I'm going to try again.
    Going to go back to uni in September to apply for jobs - money situation is getting dire.
