Is homophobia linked to certain nationalities, religions, etc?
For example, is an atheist from Stockholm or a non-practising Christian from Manchester less likely to be vehemently homophobic than a Christian from Texas or a Muslim from Islamabad?
So, are certain nationalities, religions and so on more likely to be homophobic than others or is homophobia spread across the board and not more concentrated in certain groups compared to others? -
Re: Is homophobia linked to certain nationalities, religions, etc?
I would say yes for religion as certain ones tell their followers it displeases their god so a person who follows said religion is more likely to be homophobic. Also people who don't follow a religion tend to have a more logical process of deciding if something is good or bad which usually leads them to the conclusion that persecuting people because they happen to like the same sex is hella stupid.
So obviously places where religion holds more influence are more likely to contain people who hold homophobic views which is exhibited by the various laws and punishments in underdeveloped countries.Last edited by Darth Stewie; 30-06-2012 at 04:24. -

I think that people were just ignorant towards homosexuals at the time. Religion had a very strong influence at the time so inevitably started to promote such attitudes because people generally fear things they know nothing about. You still have homophobic atheists and whatnot.
If people knew that there was nothing wrong with homosexuality at the time of religion's dominance then you would have much more accepting attitudes now. -

If you mean as some kind of genetic predisposition, no. If you mean as a result of the culture of places, absolutely. Fact is, if you grow up around backwards thinking homophobes and forceful dogmatic religion, you're more likely to hold those views yourself.

Religion.
Absolutely.
Where Christianity is very strong, namely anywhere but N.Africa, these nations have some of the worst condistions for LGBT people, then the arab world, then non-Arab islamic lands.
Then where Christianity is concentrated in non-latin south America, so the non-catholic areas, Jamaica and that general area are notirious and are perhaps the worst. Then there are anomolies, like Rastafarianism. Every thinks beacuse Bob Marley was some peace loving saint that rasta's are these calm lovely people. Hardly anyone has looked into it and basically its EXTREME Christianity, think Westboro Baptist church. -

Many religions - Christianity springs to mind first but mainly because of the recent noise they've been making - promote homophobia and for some reason, their followers ignore the other teachings of the Bible and stick with the homophobia one, probably because it gets them more attention. However, thankfully there are many Christians who have instead chosen to follow the more important teachings like tolerance and to love one another - there have been a couple on TSR - who make sure that not all of the religion gets a bad name.
I suppose if you're comparing an old-fashioned atheist in his 90s with a young Christian who is like a couple I've seen on TSR who are very tolerant, you might find that the atheist is more homophobic for reasons that extend beyond religion - the young Christian has been exposed from a young age to tolerance of homosexuality, with the Gay Pride marches and gay relationships on television not being the controversial things they used to be, whereas the atheist in his 90s' views aren't skewed by his religion or lack of, but rather the generation he comes from, where it was hidden away and seen as something that wasn't right. -

Don't think religion or nationality is necessary at all - just takes someone to dislike something and that is that.
Interesting attitude they have in Uganda however, homosexuality is not normal / natural and should be punishable by death.
