I think ill pass without a car?
Erm well most people when they pass either go and buy a car or already have one, basically for me I think ill still be saving by the time I pass, is this a bad thing? Is driving one of them things you forget or learn and never forget?
Also has anyone else ever done this, pass and still carry on saving for your car?

Re: I think ill pass without a car?
i passed 2 years ago and still dont have a car. i had the money for a car, but was going to uni so figured i could afford a car for the first year with the money i had, but then would be screwed and unable to afford it the year after that so seemed pointless to get a car just to have to give it up a year later.
i was worried i would forget what i learnt, but at christmas my mum put me on her insurance for the 2 weeks i was back home and i managed driving just fine, so i would say it is one of those things you dont forget. though it was good to have my mum in the car for the first few trips out just for a bit of moral support, plus i think she wanted to be sure i could actually drive safely under her supervision before she let me loose with her car unsupervised.
if youre worried about it then do your test and then when you are in a position to finally buy your car you can always have a few refresher lessons just to get back into the swing of driving again. -
Re: I think ill pass without a car?I didn't have a car when I passed, I passed in September and couldn't get a car until the following April and I was fine, so I'm sure you will be as well.(Original post by ORuss17)

Re: I think ill pass without a car?I saved for insurance. Not all kids have a car ready for them and the majority who passed at my school were spoilt by their parents. But yeah save up, you won't forget anything. I got back on the road 2 years after passing.(Original post by ORuss17)

Re: I think ill pass without a car?
I have a car, and did before I passed.. but I don't think that I would have failed my test, on the basis, that I got my car not long before my test, and two I didn't drive it that much really. I only got it, because it was actually cheaper to get me a car then put me on my parent's insurance... but since I passed now I can drive my dads car and my insurance is cheap! (whoohoo for dads company car schemes/insurance deals! - 10k for my mums smax as a learner, not happening since I passed (not car scheme) car scheme - £950 flat rate for any car, any driver!)

Re: I think ill pass without a car?
I bought my car about 2 months after i passed, wasn't a problem... well
... wasn't a problem after i stalled it 3 times just getting out of the driveway and got the windscreen wipers stuck on instead of indicating (they were on the other side to the car i had learned in). Oh and i bumped into the previous owners small child too... but, once i got it out of his driveway, all was fine and dandy and it all came back

Re: I think ill pass without a car?Similar situation. Passing in advance means you can have a chance for your insurance quotes to be cheaper than newly passed. Also just buy buying a car, you still have to think about insurance, road tax, mot, petrol and the rest. I shall be forever saving up now than I have passed.(Original post by ORuss17)

Re: I think ill pass without a car?
Only two of my friends had cars when they passed their test. A couple of others went on to be insured on their parent's car soon after. The rest [and the majority] have gone on to not actually drive much [if at all] for years since passing. I passed 5 months ago and haven't driven since.

I don't think it is a problem. As others have said, you can always take a refresher lesson or go out at a quiet time with someone else the first time, just to get back into it.

It's been just over 4 months since I passed my test and I haven't bought a car yet, as I'm still saving. Planning to get one in September.
At least, my insurance will be considerably cheaper, having had my license for 6 months at that point :')
