I am realllly confused!! Any help apreciated!! Thanks

Hi,
I am currently enrolled on a BTEC national Extended Diploma Lv3 in IT. In a kirklees college, i have already comleted 1 year of my course. My next year will start in september. As i left college for holidays my tutor told me to start thinking of uni. I really want to do a course for "Network Engineering" but cant seem to find anything. Can someone please help me. & do you think this is a good course at uni? If you need any more info about me i will be happy to provide.

Ps. I want this course local so it will have to be huddersfield/leeds.
Pss. If at the end of my college course i get a D*D*D* will this look good? Also will colleges from around other places call me in?

Thanks,, every single letter will be apreciated!
Have a look on UCAS course search. Network engineering is probably a bit too much of a niche subject for there to be masses of choice about where you study it, so you may have to look further afield than Leeds or Huddersfield or be prepared to consider slightly different subjects at universities nearer home.

D*D*D* will look good

I'm not really familiar enough with that subject area to offer much advice. You may get a better response in the Computer Science and IT forum

Not really sure what type of Network Engineering you're talking about as there are so many, but here's just a few I have found:

http://prospectus.lsbu.ac.uk/courses/course.php?UCASCode=H640
http://www.northampton.ac.uk/courses/84/computing-computer-networks-engineering-bsc-hons/
http://www.shu.ac.uk/prospectus/course/534/
http://www.blackpool.ac.uk/course/EX1HE524
http://www.beds.ac.uk/howtoapply/courses/undergraduate/telecommunications-and-network-engineering
http://www.uk-university.net/34105-staffordshire-university-network-engineering
etc!

I suggest you look on the UCAS search http://www.ucas.ac.uk/students/coursesearch/

I can't really give you any advantages and disadvantages of the specific subject as I have never done this course before, the only thing I have done is A Level ICT!

However doing some background research on Huddersfield university, it seems like it's a good university for your course. They're ranked 57 out of 100 on the 2013 University league tables overall as a university, which is pretty good: http://www.thecompleteuniversityguide.co.uk/league-tables/rankings

Reading one of the courses 'Engineering and Technology Management BSc(Hons) 2013-14' the university says that the course:

• Is supported by the top university Placement Unit in the country.
• Provides the educational background for Incorporated Engineer status.
• Has a graduate employment or further study rate of over 95%.

All of this seems good too.

I suggest you talk to your college tutor(s) and email different universities with your questions and generally to get a different perspective of what each university is like. Also defiantly go on Open Days that universities will be starting now for 2013 intake- it will help a lot!

Good luck with your search!

Networking is better served by vocational qualifications. Things like the CCNA. That will be about setting up, troubleshooting etc networks. If you want to go more technical like designing them, then a Computer Systems Engineering course is what you would want, but you might not actually get that much specifically to do with networking until your third year or work.

I think I did not do as well as I hoped for my AS exam, so I have thought of a back up plan for next year, I was wondering if I could complete 9 units of Btec in these 5 months summer holiday, rather than being lazy and doing nothing. Next year when I go back to college for my second year with not so very good grades for my AS, could my teachers sign me onto to this BTEC course for the second year, as I will have competed all the 9 units from AS during the summer holidays, my friend done this course, he managed to get all distinctions in the 9 units, so he said he will help me out by giving me his 9 units, I could use these as my guide to help me complete these units, which would mean that I have completed the whole AS year in the summer, Possible or not? Would the teachers allow this?

Thanks for your help, really appreciated!

If you do a BTEC, it has to be IT Practitioners. And continue/retake Maths A-level where necessary.

You might want to ask in the Other Exams section. I don't know if BTECs have rules on doing it in less than 2 years.
