Student loan question about the MacBook Pro.
Hello, I'm going to be applying for university soon for 2013/14. I have a question about the student loan..
Is there a limit to how much you can loan? like a set amount? I'm going to be doing a computer forensics course, so I will need a good laptop and i'm thinking of getting the MacBook Pro with all the upgrades which will come to about £3000
There's no way that I could afford it on my own, so is there anyway that I can get it added on to the loan? It will last me a good few years, so with all the extras it will get me through uni and then still be useful after, so that's why i'm thinking of the MacBook lol, and it's also been recommended by a few people doing similar courses.
Thanks

Re: Student loan question about the MacBook Pro.Seriously don't bother. That is a lot of money which I doubt Student Finance will happily want to give you. Why not go for a cheaper option which isn't Mac but still has just-as-good features?(Original post by fortcaz42)

Re: Student loan question about the MacBook Pro.
The loans your are entitled to depends mainly on your parents income, you can find the actual figures on the student finance website yourself. And of course there is a limit on how much you can borrow, I think the maximum for 2012/2013 is around 7125 p/y but that includes loans and non repayable grants, and excludes any individual university bursaries. And there is no way to get any "extra" loan from student finance.
I don't recommend spending more than 1k on a computer, even 1k is pushing it. Your uni might provide very high spec computers for your course if that is even needed. -
It will be possible if you stay at home not on campus, then you could use your maintenance loan for your gadget... but its not plausible.
Best thing to do is to ask for sponsorship/subsidy from the uni which will be your firm choice.

Re: Student loan question about the MacBook Pro.
I got myself last year a £999 macbook pro using a 6 month interest free deal. Within 3 months i paid it all. Depends on the reseller, but the 13inch screen and key sizes etc is excellent. It has more than enough power to play GTA San Andreas, and everything else is significantly easier for the laptop.
You don't need a £3k laptop for uni. A £999 MacBook Pro is perfect. Avoid the macbook air, due to its limited features though. Practicality rules over beauty. -

Re: Student loan question about the MacBook Pro.
This is the reason the rest of the adult population has absolutely nothing but contempt for students who go to 'demos' to protest the so called 'dire situation for students'. With people demanding unconditional loans so they can buy unnecessarily expensive laptop. Unless you're a professional graphic designer that travells a lot and needs to do serious processor heavy work on the go, you do not need a Macbook Pro 'with all the upgrades'. My guess is you want to do a bit of facebooking, a bit of BBC iPlayer, write up an essay and browse the internet.
Buy a cheap Dell laptop with Windows 7 and you're sorted. -
Re: Student loan question about the MacBook Pro.
I don't understand why so many people insist on wasting their whole loans on crappy Macbooks. Get a real computer if you must, for like quarter of the price (Assuming you spend £3000 like you said) you will have a really decent one, or for half the price you will have an AMAZING computer.
