New Gaming/Home Build- Windows 7
Hey,
I'm building a new rig and I'm ready to order but one thing that I have noticed is just how expensive Windows 7 HP 64 Bit OEM is! - £70!!!
Amazon, ebuyer, ebay- they are all the same price, I'm wondering if there is away around this cost.
From experience I know that if you torrent it all you get is an awful black screen and annoying 'not genuine' notices. So I want fully genuine software- torrented or not.
Now there's no point in waiting for W 8 - the previous generation OS never gets significantly cheaper.
- Are there are websites that offer it cheap I've missed?
- Student discounts etc?
- Could I somehow get it cheaper through my 6th Form college?
- Or could I buy an upgrade version [about £20-30 cheaper than full version] and do the registry edit? - All the articles on that are years old- so does that still work? I have heard that Microsoft are starting to 'crack down' whatever that means. I know that you can use the Upgrade disk for clean installs- thats no problem, the problem is getting your version 'genuin-ised xD', does the registry trick still work?
So, any ideas, thoughts, advice?
Appreciated.Last edited by samw94; 03-07-2012 at 13:55. -
Re: New Gaming/Home Build- Windows 7
You could get the upgrade version from one of the student discount software websites and do a clean install with it, it is possible and will be the cheapest method for a genuine OS.
And no you are incorrect about the black screen and not genuine notices, they only appear if you don't know what you are doing and do it wrong. -

But i'm sure you can reuse the key on your previous pc/laptop?
That Windows for around £70 is the cheapest you'll ever get.
Also whats your build? -

Re: New Gaming/Home Build- Windows 7Seems good, heads up though, a 6950HD is £160 from Scan, and a 7850 is £180 both of which are better than the ti, so make sure you not paying too much for your 560ti.(Original post by samw94)

And get some good thermal past like mx-4 to get better cooling if you want.
120gb SSD kingston is on for £59 from dabs.
You really haven't got a choice about the OS, but to buy one or use your old one and that serial key. -
Re: New Gaming/Home Build- Windows 7I have managed to find a seller on Amazon who is giving me the GTX 560 Ti for £140 including delivery! So I'm happy with that, otherwise I would be getting the 7850. And I'll check out that SSD, thanks. I might look at a Hybrid.(Original post by Iqbal007)

Might be worth a look if you're happy enough to go with Win 8. -
Re: New Gaming/Home Build- Windows 7Make sure it ain't 2nd hand or anything...you could have also gotten the Asus directcu ii version.(Original post by samw94)

Hybrids don't come as close to SSD speed, but are faster than a standard hdd as it uses a small flash SSD memory. -

Quick question but is the OEM the right one? What's the difference between that and the full version when building a computer?
Basically it's like the retail version, except that it comes will less flashy packaging, no support from Microsoft and it's license is limited to 1 pc, so if your motherboard get's destroyed, you got to call them up to reactivate the serial.
And unlike the full version where you get both the 32bit and 64bit dvd, you have to pick between 2, so one only, obviously 64bit.Last edited by Iqbal007; 03-07-2012 at 21:29. -
Re: New Gaming/Home Build- Windows 7I think you may want to wait for Windows 8, because windows 7 during pre-order was around £65 or so to get some buzz going.(Original post by samw94)
I think I'll buy a Windows 7 Professional UPGRADE disc from software4student, whack that onto my new HDD with clean install, then do the registry edit.
And yea its not second hand, I've bought with them before
But an upgrade disc should do a clean install...also the windows 8 one is excepted to cost around the same or less -
Re: New Gaming/Home Build- Windows 7Once you install the OEM version on one computer that is it, the serial cannot be used on another computer. However the retail version can be installed on one computer, then the serial can be used again on a different computer. You can't use it on multiple computers at the same time though, it must be uninstalled from one and installed on another and activated.(Original post by WilliamG)

The ones selling for around £70 online are usually OEM versions, I believe the retail versions sell for £100+
EDIT: Why is it I always reply to a post made over an hour ago and by the time I eventually hit reply the question has been answered and several other posts have been made? Happens every time
