Are there no such things as "good" politicians?
I found a website that explains why: http://savior.hubpages.com/hub/ethicsviewsofpolitics

(BTW does that mean Winston Churchill is also corrupt or greedy or whatever bad thing he is, in spite of the good he's done i.e. saving Britain from evil Nazis?)

There is no such thing. These people want power. Power over me, power over you. It is a very dangerous mindset.

People vote for the politicians who tell them what they want to hear, not the ones who always tell the truth. That's why the people who are best suited to running the country are the people who are least likely to have the chance.

real talk here, they would've disappeared into obscurity if they tried to do the right thing instead of climbing the career ladder for their own good

It depends on what makes someone 'good'. What one man thinks good, another may think evil.

For example, I think Gary Johnsn would be a good President of the United States (provided he stood by his promises). Not perfect, to me, but good.

I think Mitt Romney and Barack Obama would both be bad, but in different ways.

It's practically certain someone on this same forum has a completely opposite idea.

This is an issue of structure vs agency. In political science this is the impact of institutions and circumstances and an individual's ability to independently effect change. In summary, politicians are constrained by lots of different things which lead them to have to negotiate, compromise and otherwise sacrifice ideals in order to get anywhere or create any change.

The ones who do not play the system and make these compromises cannot rise through the ranks.

We do not need a system that gets virtuous men in to office. We need a system where we get the wrong people to do the right thing.

Churchill didn't save Britain from the Nazis the people did all he did was give them inspiration, but also bankrupted the country, He has condoned what Hitler did but rather the gassing of black peoples, all I view him as is an inspirational figure head of fantastic quotes but as a person he was terrible.

Yes politicians seek to be good to the people, You can't say David Cameron is inherently bad, he seeks to do good, He wants to make Britain a better place to live, however things prevent such things from happening. Obviously to sort out the current problems by taxing people and freezing peoples pay, even though he has U turned a few times and can't rule as he wants to being in a coalition he is still a good politician, no?

However when it comes to Champagne socialists like Ed balls, deary me... or in fact Tony Blair, like Churchill a fantastic spoke person, but only in it for personal gain.

Yes, although all polititions want power, some of the only want that power to make changes which they think will benifit the country and its inhabitants.
Unfortunitly everybody has different ideas of "good" and the polititions that do actualy care about us generaly dont get positions of power.

William Hague? He is the only politician that I currently have any respect for, oh and Ken Clarke i guess, I'm not even a true Tory. They lack overt ideology which is a big tick for me, I hate tribal partisanship :P

John Major. I know people love to criticise him but I genuinely do think he was well meaning and tried his best to do the job well.
