LSE geography applicant 2012
Hi,
I am currently an A2 student. I am considering applying for LSE to do geography. I have got a few questions.
How is the geography department like in LSE? How are the teachers? I heard that the teachers in LSE generally do not tend to offer help so that students have to work on their own for most of the time. I know that geography is not one of LSE's core subject, but I love the fact that they do human geography only.
How is the life in LSE in terms of social and sports? LSE does not seem to have a big population, so I am a bit worried about the social life because there is not a big population in my sixth form and my social life could have been much better.
How much is the weekly living cost generally? -
Re: LSE geography applicant 2012
Hey, sorry if this has reached u a little late,
i just finished my 2nd year at LSE doing human geography (BA).
Basically the geography dept at LSE is quite small but very specialized, it has lots of world renown academics and the teaching is pretty standard what you would expect from a good university.
Remember your at uni so independent learning is pretty much what you will be doing most of the time, lectures will guide you but you have to do the readings, LSE stresses that and so does make you work a hell of a lot, but you do have access to any teachers/lecturers for advice/help throughout the year so you wont be alone.
Unfortunately, geography doesnt have a committed society that runs socials for students, (something that im working on), so you do feel that you dont know your classmates too well. However, there are sooooo many societies you can get involved in and meet ppl from all over the world. At the end of the day it doesnt matter how big or small a uni is, just how open and willing you are to join new things.
In terms of living costs i know that living in London is pretty expensive (i live at home), accomodation is guaranteed for 1st years in LSE halls where you'll meet most of your friends, the next 2 years should be little cheaper as you split the costs with friends. Sorry i dont know more about exact weekly costs.
Finally, most ppl generally do like geography here, unlike say law or economics, its broad based, interesting, and you get to go New York in 2nd year (I come back 2 days ago it was amazing!!!). And obviously your job prospects will be pretty damn good as well.
Hope this helps

however, i have already applied to do Environment and Development in LSE and have already got an offer. I think these two courses are quite similar. Do you know anything about this course?
Geography sounds very exciting!! -
Re: LSE geography applicant 2012
Hey again,
Congratulations at getting an offer!!!
I havent actually heard of that course i only know of; geography, env policy, and geog with econ, maybe its new
Anyways ive done bits of env and Third world development here and there in certain modules. im not much of an env person, (ur at LSE so it might be economicsy), but i did like devp.
Sounds like a great course tho, i am sure u will enjoy it

Re: LSE geography applicant 2012Hi there, just saw this thread whilst browsing the internet. I have finished A2 and contemplating whether I should take my offer to study Law at Exeter or reapplying to study geography at LSE.(Original post by MALL COP)
Hey,
Im glad i could be of some help
My a-levels were history, politics and geogaphy-AAA (AS physics E but no one needs to know about that
)
Good luck with your exams
If I had a good chance of getting an offer from LSE, I would take a gap year and reapply in a heartbeat. May I ask, what were your GCSE grades? Because I understand that LSE are quite selective and places a great weighing in GCSE's.
Thanks

Re: LSE geography applicant 2012
@ Kevin
My GCSEs were not super duper amazing- 1A*,5A,3B and 1C
I personally feel GCSE scores are not THAT important as a weight, what you want is AT LEAST A or B in Maths, English and Science, and really nail ur Alevels (theyre more important)
What i realised with LSE, by talking to other students as well admissions, is that they give offers to 2 kinds of ppl: those who only know A* and nothing else (The super clever), and those who write a passionate personal statement (The super passionate)
I would fall in the second category because im not really that bright, so i cant stress ur personal statement enough.
Hope this helped and hope all goes well with u

Re: LSE geography applicant 2012
Hi,
Im hoping to apply for economics with geography at LSE this year, and do you think i would have any chance with my rather poor AS grades: ABBD. (mind the A was in Geog and well over 90% over the two exams), and I've taken on Economics AS for this year... They made me drop the extended project because i cant do 5 subjects apparently!
And any advice on personal statments?
I know you cant say exactly what to right, but just on like the style of writing and stuff like that?
Also, what are LSEs policies on retakes? Im planning to retake a Biology Unit in January
@ Kevin: wow you did a lot of subjects at A2! and did very well too!
Thanks..
