Hello to students at UK Universities,

My name is Kevin Cheung and I am a PhD student conducting research at the University of Derby. My work examines academic writing at higher education level and focuses on use of a concept called ‘authorial identity’ to improve student writing. Using this concept in our teaching could improve the ways that universities teach students to write.

I am currently developing a questionnaire to measure authorial identity and part of this process involves analysing the responses of people from the target population. I have developed an online version of my survey that is available at the link below and I am looking for current UK based students to fill it in. Running through the process takes about 15 minutes and is very straightforward. The data is collected anonymously by the system and ethics procedures are in place to protect your information. The only personal data requested is an email address (optional) for a prize draw to thank participants for their time. You will also be asked to make a unique id code for use in the case of withdrawal. I will not be passing these scores on to tutors at any university and I will not be analysing your scores individually. You can also contact me to request the withdrawal of your data within four weeks of completing the survey.

Yes but a lot of them are demographics asking about your studies. The first 20 questions are things that you can answer in 2 seconds such as "What is your nationality?" or "Are you an online or on-campus student?" The actual survey questions are all multiple choice, so please don't be put off by the number of questions. Most people I have feedback from have said it takes 10-12 minutes to complete and it really is important research that I feel very strongly about.

In order to get University policy makers to listen to me, my research has to be rigorous and cover all of these aspects. I am genuinely trying to improve teaching and that can't be done by cutting corners.
