    serious revision help needed
I am currently studying the ABE level 4 diploma business management course at college and I do four subject (units). The guided learning hours for each unit are 100 but I would prefer 150 unit hours to fully understand each of the subjects in depth. The problem is I don't know how many hours to revise each day. My exam is on the 4th and 5th of Dec "12 and I've got two practical subjects, maths and accounts, and two theory subjects, introduction to business and introduction to business communication, each with a guided learning hours of 100 by ABE, so can someone tell me how many hours I need to revise each day in order to get all A* in these four subjects and finish the material on time?

Another problem I have is that when I sit to read I feel burnt out. It takes me more than 40 minutes to read and fully understand one page! So anyone has any solutions to becoming a quicker reader or any other better way of revising other than reading? I've tried recording book chapters but my books have 300+ pages in them and recording them is a daunting task; furthermore, I tend to waver when I listen to my notes. So, recording is no option for me.

And one last thing - I like studying in the evening, because that's the time I work best, so my study hour that is most productive is 07PM to 08PM.

    Please help me. Thank you.

Make post it notes containing only the key points as you read the pages and then stick them on the wall next to/above your bed and spend a few minutes after you wake up each day just reading them

Okay that's an idea I'll give attention to; however, I needed help in calculating how many hours I should revise each day and that's why I gave the facts and the date when my exam is. Could you please calculate for me how many hours I need to revise each day based on the 100 learning hours and the number of subjects I do and the time I have till my exams?

From now until the 4th of December there is 151 days.

    100 hours per 4 units = 2 hours 40 minutes a day

    150 hours per 4 units = 4 hours a day

Thank you for your calculation. But can you confirm the second calculation for me.Are you sure 150 hours results in such a big difference from the prior calculation that it becomes 4 hours a day? Please confirm and show your working. Thanks.

    150 x 4 = 600

    600 / 150 = 4

Thank you. However, 4 hours every single day is too much, so I'll just stick to the 2 and a half hours a day. Is that alright?

Thanks for the above replies but can someone please help me in by giving some tips on how to become a faster and more productive reader. I would really appreciate that.

    Hi there,

    reading tips:

    1) do not read everything, you need to learn to pick out key information (skim read).
    2) Get an overall understanding of the content of the book, chapter, article etc. before you spend any great amount of time reading the entire piece. Do this by a) getting to grips with the title, b) read the introduction, c) then read the conclusion (concluding paragraph). When you have a feel for the overall content this will make it easier for you to skim read. Of course, if this is a really crucial chapter then I'd recommend spending more time on it. If it's peripheral information then spend less time on it.

However, this said I think you are making a mistake if you think that by rigidly sticking to 2 or 3 hours a day you are guaranteed a pass. One hour of intensive study is better than three half-hearted hours. Some people will require more time, some people less to get to grips with the topics. Rather than focusing solely on time spent revising, focus on outcomes, i.e. your ability to answer test questions correctly or summarise in writing or verbally to a friend the content of a key chapter. Set yourself manageable goals (e.g. if you need to revise 12 chapters then perhaps try to revise a chapter a week and reward yourself every time you have successfully revised a chapter). If you set yourself goals that are too high you will not feel motivated to start, if they are too low you will not reach the required level. A little bit often will do the trick! Good luck...
