    Learning French alongside degree?
    Hi,

I studied French at AS level and achieved an A, however I dropped this subject in order to do 3 A levels instead of 4. I was hoping I could pick up French again when I went to university. Since there is no option to select language modules in my degree (I do medicine) I was hoping to take evening classes or the like alongside my degree.

However, I go to university of Nottingham where they charge £200 for language classes, which quite frankly I can't afford.

Basically, what I'm asking is what are my other options? Has anyone any experience with books/courses/websites which have aided them in self-teaching?

First of all, congrats on the A, don't know how you did it! 3 attempts later and i've just about hacked it Does Nottingham have a language resource centre? You could maybe put up a notice for any students from France you could meet up with?

Nottingham does have a language resource centre but unless you're really motivated and into self-study it might be quite difficult. I often wish they could make language classes free in a bid for employability. Are you hoping to use your French and medicine together in the future (i.e. developmental work abroad) ?

It's definitely something that I'd like to look into. I know other medical schools that I went to see on open days last year offered medical French/German/Spanish courses etc so it would be nice if Nottingham were able to offer the same.

I also wish the language courses were free, I bet there would be a lot of interest.

With Manchester, if you took a language (French, German, Spanish, or Russian, I think) at AS level and got an A/B, you can do Medicine with European Studies, where you lean said language for 2 hours/week up until fifth year, which is when you can spend upto 16 (?) weeks on a placement in the target language's country

So you end up graduating: 'MBChB with European Studies'

I'm planning to apply to Manchester this time around (providing I get a good enough UKCAT score, and of course, my beloved AAA), as I'd really like to keep up with my German skills (took German to A2)

Not exactly sure why I just said all of that as it's irrelevant to you :erm:

Anyway, best of luck with French :yy:

Sounds great, wish I could be doing something like that! Good luck on your application
