Would you transfer to a rival club, for money?
a few friends and i recently had a rather heated debate on this matter. would you, if you played professionally in any of these scenarios, switch to your team's rival club?
a) you play for the club you support, and are offered a higher wage in a rival team.
b) you play for a club you like, but a rival team approaches you.
c) you play for a club you don't really care for on a personal level, and are offered a higher wage in a rival team.
i argued that i would shamelessly betray my club, if it meant a higher salary. sure, the fans would hate me, but unless you're Denis Law, you're not really going to care about it are you. many people i asked told me that i was disregarding things like loyalty or respect, but after all it is my career we're talking about.

Re: Would you transfer to a rival club, for money?
It's all pantomime with the fans isn't it - there are more important things in the world, when fans demand players show loyalty I have to cringe. They do a job and they go home at the end of the day and whilst they may like playing for the club, they really don't care as much as the fans. I'd probably move for more money, why not? Get as much money as you can before your career fades out.
But, if I was a professional footballer I'd want to play every week so I'd never move if it meant I'd be sat on a bench all year. -

Its depends entirely, I'm a United supported so no for A, but if I was a Wednesday supporter, and a talented player it may be different. I would probably move in the case of B and C. As has been said it would depend on more than just wages, on playing time, position and such.

Agree with only going in scenario C. James Constable of Oxford turned down a contract from Swindon, despite the fact they were flying in the league at the time and offered him, apparently, twice the amount of wages he was on. Also he lives closer to them, but still turned them down. I think he's scenario B, but what a hero; the fans live him for not leaving to the scum.

Re: Would you transfer to a rival club, for money? No, because I would not play for a rival of my favourite team in the first place (in regards to C), and if I was playing for any team I would respect that and not betray the fans.

Re: Would you transfer to a rival club, for money?that is absolutely unbelievable to me. i'm making it no secret, i would definitely move for the money, and if the club was doing better in the league, or if i get more playing time, all the better!(Original post by Miller693)

Re: Would you transfer to a rival club, for money? To be fair, he probably wouldn't have started for them. I'm not sure he was even consistently first team for us at that moment. So I'm guessing he stayed more for game time.(Original post by punkski)

Re: Would you transfer to a rival club, for money?A & B - definitely not. C - probably not.
I really don't care about money, so playing for a team I like I'd only leave if I was no longer wanted by the club. As for a club I've no real emotional connection with - I'd probably only leave if the potential playing time was better or equal with better chances of success. -
Re: Would you transfer to a rival club, for money?yes, and this is exactly what i mean. regarding two teams of comparable strength, i wouldn't think twice to move from, say, Villa to Birmingham City, from Arsenal to Tottenham or from United to Man City.(Original post by michaelhaych)
It's very easy to say that you wouldn't move to a rival club for money because you'll never be faced with that dilemma. If you were I'm sure you'd be very tempted to take the money.
edit: of course, given i'm paid well. -

Most of us have never been exposed to professional football income so we'd all jump at the chance from our living room seats but if you're already in the sport then I don't assume an extra £60,000 would really influence me to join a club I had no passion for.
