Msc Advice Please!!!!
HI,
I have recently found out i got a 1st class BEng Hons in Mechanical Engineering Degree from Swansea university, i also have a one year undergraduate placement year at GE Oil and gas as part of my degree. I am working offshore this year as a Geophysical Engineer but hoping to do an Msc next September. I have been looking at space engineering post grad courses (Cranfield and Southampton) and also advanced mechanical engineering courses (Bristol, Cardiff, Imperial and UCL). Which unis should i apply to? am i wasting my time applying for these high ranked unis? The applications are time consuming and each one has a fee so i want to be realistic with what unis i apply to. i am particularly interested in the space engineering and astronautics course, will i get in!!!
Any advice would be much appreciated
thanks -
Re: Msc Advice Please!!!!
Hey,
I started applying for MSc about a month ago as I was extremely busy in my final year study and didn't have the time to apply. I have got a 2:1 BSc Hons in Biomedical Science in the University of Sheffield. I have applied to a few of the uni's listed here. From my knowledge UCL ask for a application fee, Imperial and Bristol don't. I have received an offer from UCL for this September and am still waiting for a reply from Imperial. A lot of people told me that getting in would be impossible or extremely difficult as places would be full. So Yes, you can get into high ranked uni's even when applying near their course deadline. I hope i have answered your question.

Re: Msc Advice Please!!!!In terms of uni rankings I would say go for it irrespective. What I would worry about is your career path. You should be able to explain really convincingly in your personal statement why you're wanting to go from geophysical/oil to space!(Original post by Amir_K)

Re: Msc Advice Please!!!!
thanks for the replys,
I will be applying for next september (2013/2014 period), my question was more will i get in to these courses having studied in with a first from a lower ranked uni
The offshore geophysical job is just a fast way of raising funds for an Msc, not really a 'career path' as such, but i know what you mean i have kind of jumped from one industry to another and now want to study in something completely different. Although the GE placement was more management type work rather than oil and gas specific technical work which should look good on my application. From what iv read the space engineering courses seem highly mechanical so im hoping a first class mechanical engineering degree will be enough
thanks -
Re: Msc Advice Please!!!!Yes, providing you have good references as well. In general, unis seem to place more emphasis on your grade than your undergrad uni, and there are a number of people on TSR who have successfully applied to top unis with first-class degrees from lower ranked ones.(Original post by Amir_K)

Re: Msc Advice Please!!!!
Just curious as to why you want to go from oil & gas to space. GE Oil & Gas are one of the biggest recruiters from my uni (and one of their main offices and factories is just ten mins walk from my house) and indeed their starting salaries and progression are excellent indeed. Even on your placement year with GE Oil & Gas you'll be getting more than the majority of graduates.

Re: Msc Advice Please!!!!
I have no concern with how much money il be making, i am not driven by money, if i wanted to make lots of money in my current role offshore (which is not far off twice as much as i would be on in GE as a graduate)
When i worked at GE i was involved in management type work which i have no desire to be involved in and i was not a huge fan of the corporate environment
I want to be involved in a career which i will be passionate about and that i find interesting, i have always been fascinated with space and would love to be involved with space engineering. Oil and Gas wasn't a career choice i chose that placement as GE are a prestigious company and were the best candidate to learn professional skills from and when i got an offer i think i would have been stupid to turn it down
