Re: Hellooo!! University of Glasgow!
Hi Alex,
What a pleasant surprise. come sta andando? (copied that off from translate.google.com
hehehe)
I am a prospective student too starting this September, don't know why but something made me reply to this thread (mind you this is my first ever reply to any Glasgow unii THREADS).
I'll be doing Economics but also, hopefully, some other subjects on the side. We're definitely going to pop into each other as we both in the same department. Where will you be staying in terms of accommodation?
I have this instinctive feeling, that it is going to be a such a great 4-years. I cannot contain my excitement. -
Re: Hellooo!! University of Glasgow!
Hey Geedan,
yeah I agree with you I have the same feeling. I can't wait to start this experience, it's gonna be great!
Talking about accommodation, since a friend of mine is coming as well (but he's going to Caledonian), we might be getting a flat by ourselves, also because I noticed that dorms aren't cheaper at all compared with flats. How about you?
Where are you from by the way? -
Re: Hellooo!! University of Glasgow!
Sounds good. Yeah I have noticed the uni accommodation prices are ridiculous price for a room. It doesn't appeal to me either, so probably going to rent a studio, one bedroom flat or perhaps a bedsit for the latter months.
I am a Muslim from Afrika, but currently living in England (Birmingham). I am assuming you've met your conditional offer by now, yes? -
Hey both of yous
I'm starting in September too
I'm doing theoretical physics with astrophysics. Even though I'm from glasgow I don't really know anyone else going to UofG this year
so Hey, how are you both ?

Re: Hellooo!! University of Glasgow!
oh hey ninja!
it's cool to meet someone who is actually from Glasgow
What you're going to study sounds very interesting! I'm very excited to come over there: first for the school and second because i'll be living in a different country
A friend of mine is coming too but he got accepted at Caledonian, and I think we are going to get a 2 bedroom flat or something. I don't think you have problems with accomodation XD -
Yeah, I think I'll be staying at home despite ucas' best efforts to get me to move to student accommodation about 15 mins away from my house lol. The reason it's so expensive is because of where it is, the accommodations in the west end and near the city, which are very desirable locations. Where abouts in Glasgow were you thinking of getting a flat?
Edit: I've got a friend going to Cali too this year, and as for moving here I think you'll really like it. Although the press conveys this idea of Glasgow being a crime filled city, I've yet to see a proper serious crime.

Re: Hellooo!! University of Glasgow!
lol yeah it wouldn't the smartest thing to do since you already have a house XD
Yeah at first I heard that Glasgow wasn't exactly the safest city, but when I checked around forums and websites to find more details, I always found people saying that it wasn't actually true and that as every city there are good areas and bad areas.
About the flat, of course we would like to get it in West End or in the City Centre but it's hard to find a good rent rate in those areas, which other areas would you reccomend that are not too far and that aren't too bad either? -
I think it's what people perceive Glasgow to be unfortunately but I'm sure it will change when people start realising it's not like that.(Original post by alexipunk)

Yeah flats are really expensive in those areas. Shawlands, Newlands and Auldhouse, around where I live, are all really nice areas and are only about 20 minutes on a bus away from the city centre, and theres loads of bus stops nearby. From there its only about 15 minutes on another bus, that you get from where you get off in town, to Glasgow uni. If you need any help finding a flat just say and I'll see if I can see anywhere

Re: Hellooo!! University of Glasgow!cool! thanks a lot for the advice. I'll check out those areas, in case we'll get desperate I'll ask your help on finding a flat XD(Original post by ninja_pidgeon)

By the way, how much does it cost a pass for buses? Are there any discounts for students? -
Its £88 for a 10 weeks of unlimited use bus pass for students, should be about £120 normally, and then you can just keep renewing that for another 10 weeks which is really good value? Where a bouts are you coming from btw(Original post by alexipunk)

Yeah that's a good plan. Also let's you settle in to the city a bit before starting uni. There's a good few hostels so you shouldn't have too big of problem. Jobs wise you may have a problem, there just seems to be very few part time jobs anywhere these days. I've been looking for about a year now and still can't find anything that could fit around school/uni time and not impact on my studying/grades(Original post by alexipunk)
We're gonna come around the mid of august, I think we'll get a hostel room meanwhile we find a flat, I would've come earlier just to find the flat but money is tight :\
I'll have to find a job too but I'll look for that once we stop being homeless XD

Im sure you will be able to find a job I think my problem was because of school times and studying and stuff but now ive got uni ill probably have more free time, have you thought about trying to get a job as a translator since your Italian. Because your a student and the person your staying with is a student you don't have to pay for council tax(Original post by alexipunk)
That sucks! I hope I'll be lucky and I'll find a job otherwise I'm pretty much ****ed lol Well i don't wanna worry now, we'll see how it goes.
But anyway what are Council taxes? and how much would you pay average for bills and stuff?
Bills wise your probably gonna be about £100-150 extra per month so not too bad.

Re: Hellooo!! University of Glasgow!Yeah that's what I was thinking too, something involving my native language. I've already applied for a job as Game Tester for Italian language, so I would have to pretty much play videogames and check if they translated well in italian XD I'd love that job I hope I'll get it hehe(Original post by ninja_pidgeon)

Oh that's good bc I saw some charts about Council Taxes and I didn't really like them lol Bills wise that's what I thought £100-150, but I just wanted to make sure.
Thanks a lot for your help by the way!
