Defected Syrian envoy lashes out at Assad
DUBAI — Nawaf Fares, who this week defected as Syria's ambassador to Iraq, on Saturday accused President Bashar al-Assad of allowing Al-Qaeda to use Syria as a springboard for attacks in his former host country.

Fares, the latest high-level official to abandon Assad, in an interview on Al-Jazeera television also accused Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki of taking a stance toward Syria that was "contradictory" to the truth.

Majority Shiite Muslim Iraq had repeatedly accused Damascus of letting Sunni insurgents and arms transit through Syria to carry out attacks inside the country, especially during the brutal sectarian conflict that erupted after US-led forces toppled Saddam Hussein's regime in 2003.

But since the uprising broke out last year against Assad -- who belongs to the Alawite offshoot of Shiite Islam -- Iraq's Shiite-led government has called for non-interference in Syria and has opposed arming Syrian rebels.

"I personally reproach the (Iraqi) prime minister on his stance, which is contradictory to the truth," Fares said.

"He knows very well what Bashar al-Assad had done to him and to all of Iraq and to Shiites specifically," Fares said, adding that Assad has "killed thousands" by opening "the doors for Al-Qaeda" militants to carry out bombings across Iraq.

Baghdad's stance was similar to that of Syria's other Shiite ally, Iran, which Fares accused of "putting pressure" on Maliki's government.

"Iran must not support a tyrant and dictator who is killing his own people, regardless of its interests," Fares told Al-Jazeera in Qatar, to which he travelled after quitting his post.

Western countries and the Syrian opposition accuse Iran of providing military support to the regime in Syria, where activists say more than 17,000 people have been killed since March 2011. Tehran denies the charge.

When asked about UN-Arab League envoy Kofi Annan's bid to get Iran's support for his tattered peace plan, Fares said: "Iran is part of the problem. How could it be part of the solution?"

"The Syrian revolt will win despite Iran and all countries backing the tyrant," whom Fares described as "Syria's former president who is now a criminal and a killer."

Fares, the first Syrian ambassador to defect to the opposition, was widely seen as a regime hardliner and his decision, announced on Al-Jazeera on Wednesday, was surprising.

The MHoC hopes that this will be the first of many defections. Assad must go.

Georgia echoes the views of the MHoC and calls for al Assad to go. Georgia welcomes this statement by Nawaf Fares and hope that other Syrian official follow in a similar way. However we would like to stress that just because Mr Fares has defected that does not mean he should not be held accountable for the actions of the Syrian regime. Every member of the illegitimate al Assad regime should face the consequences of their brutal actions.

India remains resolute in condemning the Syrian government, but it urges the international community to act with caution before giving full support to the Syrian opposition, which remains leaderless and fragmented.

Libya hopes that all other Syrian diplomats will follow this man's lead. Assad must go and Libya has already fully recognised the Syrian National Council as the true government of Syria.

The French Republic recognises that this is good news for the Syrian people, who now have one fewer man to count among their oppressors. We reaffirm our commitment to ending the civil war and formally encourage other members of the regime to follow suit, we shall offer them amnesty in France and assist as much as possible with their escape should they make themselves known to us.

Georgia would like to welcome the French representative to his post and we look forward to working closely with our friends from the Republic on many issues at the MUN. Georgia is concerned with the amnesty offer France is willing to give defected members of the murderous al Assad regime. Georgia believes that these defected members have committed horrific acts of violence and should be held accountable for their actions and not be offered a 'free get out of jail card'.

France has welcomed in recent weeks the Syrian ex-general Manaf Tlass; we are hoping he is the first of many defectors. Encouraging defection can only be properly achieved with the promise of amnesty, and we believe such a policy is therefore crucial to weakening the Assad regime. Obviously our offer does not extend to those directly responsible for blatant crimes against humanity, however we would consider allowing that if it were the clearest route to preventing future massacres.

Malaysia sees this as the start point for what is hoped to be a domino effect of defections in opposition to President Assad's Government.
