The Olympic Park - an Orwellian Nightmare
There are 2 rings or layers of security that prevent anyone from getting anywhere near the Olympic site.
The fist layer is a ring of security guards whose job it is to stop people from approaching the fences and using roads or pavements which are out of bounds. The second layer consists of sky high perimeter fences with razor wire which surround the Olympic site entirely. Guarding these fences are the army whose job it is to control access to the Olympic park itself. There is of course the intrusive and excessive use of CCTV at the Olympic park, but that goes without saying now, Britain has sleepwalked into a culture of CCTV surveillance.
There are also several police dogs on standby for what I do not know.
All in all it feels like walking into a fascist police state. Is this really what the Olympics is all about?Last edited by extom; 15-07-2012 at 13:02. -
Well considering the sheer amount of people that will be attending the Olympics, it'd be the perfect playground for 'terrorists'. Not that any other people gathering event wouldn't be, such as festivals, but as the Olympics is probably more widely watched internationally than say, Glastonbury, it'd allow for a higher impact. Possibly.

Re: The Olympic Park - an Orwellian Nightmare
I think you're a bit of an idiot if you don't know "what the point of it all is". The Olympics does need all this security of course. But I'm not a fan of the Olympics, and it's much more hassle than its worth.
I actually clicked on this thread ready to rep you because I loved the title of the thread. An ]Orwellian nightmare. But youve explained yourself in a dismal manner. -
Re: The Olympic Park - an Orwellian NightmareThey can't risk you seeing the alien death ray until it's too late.(Original post by extom)

The fist layer is a ring of security guards whose job it is to stop people from approaching the fences. There are sky high perimeter fences with razor wire on top which surround the Olympic site entirely. Guarding and controlling these fences are the army who have set-up dozens of security checkpoints that anyone who enters the site must pass through. They are airport style security stations.
what exactly the point of all this remains a mystery to me

I don't want to know anything else. What i thought would be a post likening the security of the Olympics to Orwell's famous book, has turned into a post just slagging off the olympics. Judging by your previous posts, you're not a fan of the Olympics and this post is just another excuse to rant about it. Here's news for you, a lot of Londoners aren't bothered by the Olympics either, -
Re: The Olympic Park - an Orwellian Nightmare
I'm staying away from it as far as possible.
It's ultimately so sad aswell. I went to the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics which were brilliant, the security was relaxed and you were allowed to bring what you wanted, plus the tickets were a third of the price that the 2012 ones are. -
Re: The Olympic Park - an Orwellian NightmareYes, because it's Canada. No self-respecting terrorist would bother.(Original post by ConnorB)

Re: The Olympic Park - an Orwellian NightmareI was there yesterday, technically its a building site, still has workman, putting up signs, sweeping paths, removing portacabins, so its not open to the public, all big building projects are like this, its too stop thieves and children getting in. Wait for just 12 days, and then watch and wonder at a Park Land, full of great buildings surrounded by flowers and trees, then come back on here and admit that just maybe, you are wrong. The fist layer is a ring of security guards whose job it is to stop people from approaching the fences,
The second layer consists of sky high perimeter fences with razor wire
