Whirring sound when changing gears at high-ish revs- Any ideas? [Sound clip inside!]
Hi all,
My car has recently stared making a bit of a whirring noise when changing gears at highish revs. Redline on my car is 8k I believe, and these changes were done at 6k, so I shouldn't be pushing the limits of my car by any means. The car is 1.8L, naturally aspirated.
Here's the clip:

The noise didn't pick up too well on my phone's microphone. If you turn up your volume you can hear it best during the second and third gear change - just a high pitch whirr/whoosh. Could it be the clutch release bearing?Last edited by Ghost; 15-07-2012 at 15:50. -

I couldn't really pick anything up, but I'm not in the quietest place. Is it particularly noticeable?
Very, very faint squeal at 0:09 and 0:19, but you'd have to turn your sound right up to hear it. -

I would say its probably to do with the clutch. Could be the bearing or the clutch not being adjusted right. I would be surprised if it was the gearbox but it could be the baulk rings that are slightly worn. If it is then you probably have 1000's miles left in them. Quite frankly you are driving it hard so I would stay steady and just see where you go from there. For a quick fix try lubricating the clutch pedal linkage. I know that they can squeak like an old gates on some Mercedes!
I love the noise of cars and especially indicators
