Re: Lifeguard job
Not hard, it's a pretty awful and boring job. There's usually part-time work going at places, especially at weekends, but where I am (Edinburgh atm) there's a lot of pools Council pools pay more but you'll more often be doing cleaning. Some of the private clubs only pay minimum wage :l

Re: Lifeguard job
I did my lifeguarding qualification in Swansea, but struggled to find anywhere hiring. It still comes in handy now, as it boosted my interest in swimming, and got me going much more regularly to keep up my fitness. But I'm sure there are much more lively and less boring jobs out there, as was mentioned above. I'm still not lifeguarding, but I'm not sorry I did it

Re: Lifeguard job
lol lifeguard jobs, the only good thing about them is that when you tell a girl online on a site like TSR that you're a lifeguard she will picture a bronzed stud on a Miami beach, when in reality you're a skinny spotty teenager in a tracksuit sat by the pool in a leisure centre telling kids to stop messing about whilst earning £3 an hour

Re: Lifeguard jobA friend did a lifeguard at the local council pool, it cost him £210 pound, a week later he got a part time job, even though he does around 40 hours a week. He earns £7.50 an hour and double time on Sunday. It depends what age you are, but if you are a student, you can't get a much better job for experience than a lifeguard at a council run pool. Think of all the personal qualities it entails, then you realize what employers think of it, much higher than a fast food worker for sure.(Original post by Cammy95)
Iam looking at taking a course on becoming a lifeguard but i was wondering how many people who pass the course get jobs afterwards?
or
How easy is it to get a job as a lifeguard? -
Re: Lifeguard jobYeh a lot of the stuff you do is more cleaning than actual lifeguarding. But I don't get why council pools pay lifeguards more money than the private gyms, even though the private gym charges you much more than council ones.(Original post by Aeschylus)

Re: Lifeguard jobMaybe a little bit beside the point of the original post, but, private gyms are of course in the private sector, meaning they're looking to maximise their profit. Lower wages = higher profits. Council pools are in the public sector (run by government/council), so are looking to break even by using any profits to improve facilities and service to the community, so I guess that involves using excess funds to pay staff extra wages.(Original post by iceman95)

Not sure exactly why they'd want to pay them much more than the private sectors do, but perhaps it has something to do with using up all their budget, to ensure they don't get a lower one provided by the government the next time. Or it may have something to do with equality legislation. (An employer must pay two jobs of equal value the same amount.) -
Re: Lifeguard jobWhen my brother was 16 he got a job at Geoff Moulder (our local council run leisure center), bear in mind he was 16 and he was paid the same wage as 45 year olds of £7.50 p/h and double time on Sunday's.(Original post by Chrisruptor)

Re: Lifeguard jobYeh but it takes time for everything to be processed. Its been 2 months since I completed my NPLQ training I still do not hold a job. Everything such as reference, medical report have been completed and my CRB came back 2 weeks ago and it's on review by the HR manager then I'll be ready for casual work. I applied for a different council site almost 2 months ago and they only just shortlisted their applicants as their HR had been busy as they went holidays.(Original post by jameslad)
Easy getting a job. Work for council pools! They would always take in people
I get paid £7.20 per hour.
Easy money. -
Re: Lifeguard jobVery true. The process took me like 4 months!!(Original post by iceman95)

Re: Lifeguard jobYeh mine came just less than a month. I am working casually now at a local council but they only pay me £4.85 as I'm under 18 or else the pay would would have been £6.47 for 18. I applied to another local council but they had put my application on hold as there had been too many applicants, and I had no experience. So in three months my application would go straight to interview as they would assume I have some experience which I do and that council pool pays £8.62 regardless of your age.(Original post by jameslad)

Re: Lifeguard job
Being a lifeguard can be boring at times it just depends what's happening in the pool or leisure centre at the time. I personally love sundays because theres an inflatable session then a pool party it kind of keeps the day moving. I'd take it even if you don't get a job it looks good on your CV =).
