can you do your silver duke of edinburgh expedition before completing the skills/physical/volunteering activities?

You certainly can! And from that point you have up until the age of 25 to complete your Silver activities and recieve your award.

Infact, you can actually have an award pending which means you could start your Gold award (for an example an expedition) even though you might not quite have finished Silver yet.

Yes. Although you will need to have done all your pre-expedition training (navigating, camping, first aid etc.) before heading for the hills. Some providers set their own rules though - the school I used to help out with wanted at least one section finished and ideally all of them before the expeditions begun to help ensure everyone starting the DofE scheme would finish.

okay thanks its just that my school said you have to have completed bronze to do silver, even though I know you can jump straight into silver...
