How did you decide which Uni to attend?
Hi Everyone!
I am considering studying in the UK. I currently live in the United States and am doing research on HE in the UK.
As part of my studies, I need to do some marketing research on how students choose which Uni they want to attend or how the Uni chooses them.
1st question -
How do Universities in the UK attract students? i.e. are they mailing you a prospectus, advertising on billboards or TV, coming to your schools to meet you?
How are they selling their institution to you?
Any information you could share with me would greatly help me in my studies.
Thanks! -
Re: How did you decide which Uni to attend?
You might notice a few universities using adverts on websites such as this one. There are also often posters on public transport and stations around the UK.
Often, universities will attend a UCAS fair, where each institution has a little stall and students can go there and chat to people and pick up prospectuses. I've not seen a uni advertise on TV, but they might do. Some universities run mini-lectures and taster days for prospective students, which serves as a method of selling themselves. The most conventional methods are through websites, prospectuses and university open days. -

Thanks for your response. Do you feel like you had all the necessary tools to find the right Uni for you? If not, what do you think would have helped you make a better decision?

In your opinion, what does a 'well established reputation' entail? In the USA places like Harvard or Princeton have fantastic reputations so I am curious if our Unis have well established reputations for the same reasons yours do. Thanks for your help!

We just kind of know (in Scotland)... like in my school the choices were Glasgow University, Strathclyde University, etc. (Ones near to/in Glasgow). But if you had enough money to move away (only 5 of us did out of a year of 90ish) you went further afield
I'm sure you have to apply for a prospectus. But there's also open days for each uni which some schools I know tell you about.
They basically 'sell' their institution through having a well established reputation

Cool, sounds the same as here. Thanks for your insight. It looks like I have quite a bit of research to do.

A well established uni (I'm talking from experience rather than actual dictionary definition stuff here
) would be like, the oldest and most prestigious I guess! Say the oldest being St Andrews, Glasgow University and Aberdeen (consecutively). Usually (usually) if they're old they're good
So I guess it'd be the same kinda thing as the US on the basis that Yale, Harvard etc are really old
