Honestly how important is first year of studying the LLB Law Degree?
Hey guys,
I just finished my first year at Nottingham Trent University and due to unforeseen circumstances my final grade will be a 2:2 in first year. Now throughout my life I have always had a "everything is important" mindset which I did this year. Now next year I know what I have to do and will do everything possible to do it, but my question is what is my disadvantage now. Do employers actually consider the first year?
Thanks

It depends on who you are applying to. Some of the large firms will ask for a breakdown of your marks, especially for the QLD subjects, but there are plenty of firms that will only ask your overall grade. IIRC the first year marks don't count towards your degree classification so work hard and push for a good 2:1 or higher.

Heh, i've just qualified from NTU

It's not vitally important towards your degree, as it doesn't count for your overall grade, but as someone above said, a lot of law firms ask you to list your individual grade modules (a lot of the firms i've been applying to have done this), so it's best to do as well as you an consistently over the 3 years. Also, if you want to apply for training contracts towards the end of your second year, you'll only have your first and second year makrs form which to predict what grade you will get overall.
Generally though, as long as you get a 2:1 next year and the year after, you should be fine, as a lot of graduate employers still only ask for a grade classification witout asking for a module-grade breakdown.
