Feel like an idiot for choosing derby university
I was really looking forward to studying at derby uni and i have already paid my deposit on my accommodation but a friend of mine is going to manchester and we are both classed as self supporting adults so the same funding but he gets £2000 off his accommodation, £1000 from the uni bursary and £2000 off his tuition fees. I have rang derby and they say im entitled to nothing. Is this right one uni can offer so much funding and another none at all. Also if you want a room at the halls of residence you need to apply before the funding information is on the university website. I was really looking forward to moving derby now i feel like an idiot for choosing derby

Re: Feel like an idiot for choosing derby university
I believe each university has its own bursary scheme and they vary where you go. Manchester Uni has much more money than Derby which is probably why your friend gets more assistance with costs. Check online or ring up to see if you are eligible for anything else, there are usually schemes at most universities.

Re: Feel like an idiot for choosing derby universityThe government gives one set of funding, individual uni's also have other funding options.(Original post by formanmark)

Busaries vary from uni to uni, just like the extra funding your mates getting over you. -
I must admit tho the universities have you where they want you. You have to apply early in the year. And apply for the accommodation between may and july but they do not have tell you about any bursaries until september. Seems like a lottery to me you either get a uni like me where you get next to nothing after bills or a uni where u have enough money go wild.

Re: Feel like an idiot for choosing derby universityAll universities have a financial info bit on their sites, highlighting everything they offer(Original post by formanmark)

Re: Feel like an idiot for choosing derby universitySadly, yes, it's entirely at their own discretion. I doubt that Derby have funds comparable to Manchester for offering such things.(Original post by formanmark)

I've toured both the universities of Derby and Manchester and the surrounding areas and really Manchester hands down has the better social life. (It could be the case that drinks are cheaper in Derby though.)(Original post by formanmark)
Please tell me something like manchester uni has no social life and drinks in derby cost 50p lol thats what i would really like to hear lol.
Derby University has certain positive aspects and I'm certainly not going to totally lay into it in its own sub-forum in front of people who attend it or plan to, but it's behind Manchester in most aspects by some distance. My friend who studied there was constantly complaining about the poor facilities and lack of resources in the library and on Blackboard. It left me feeling that Derby had a lot of room for improvement. Manchester Uni on the other hand is fantastic, I have a lot of respect for it and really it deserves a higher place than it often gets in the newspaper rankings.Last edited by Craig_D; 21-07-2012 at 02:54. -
Re: Feel like an idiot for choosing derby universitysince we're going down anecdote boulevard I'll just add that we had some 3rd year transfers in from other unis Fd courses and several of them were telling me it was better organised and more professional than the places they'd come from.(Original post by Craig_D)
Sadly, yes, it's entirely at their own discretion. I doubt that Derby have funds comparable to Manchester for offering such things.

I'd also add I agree that manchester is a fantastic uni with a world reputation... But not usually considered as competing with Derby for the same 6th form leavers due to having higher grade requirements.
If I was 18 again and had the grades for manchester I'd need a good reason for picking derby over manchester. -
Right ok thanks for the replies. Was sort of hoping derby would be better in some way i have overlooked but owell. Suppose ill have look at the bright side. Ive actually managed to get an uncoditional firm place at a uni when 6months ago i was crawling through lofts and pulling big swa's in.
Also i suppose it will give me the added encouagement to get part time work.
On a pluss note ive worked at keele and staffs uni's and the accomodation seems better located at deby and derby did have the most friendly staff to talk to over the phone.

Re: Feel like an idiot for choosing derby university
Derby is a small and compact university and doesn't have the financial resources compared to university's such as Manchester etc, but their bursaries are awarded automatically based on data pased on by Student Finance England with regards to your household income etc. I believe they currently offer 300 scholorships based on this criteria, if you qualify you will get £3000 in your first year.
Also take into account Derby University tuition fee's aren't as high as many other institutions.
I hope this helps.
