Thinking Of Applying For History...Slight Problem...
    Hi guys,

sorry if this is in the wrong place, but i'm needing some advice.

I really want to study History at university, but i have a slight issue in that the highest level of history qualification i have is a Standard Grade...now, Stirling University doesnt specifically ask for it in the course description, and only want 4Bs: i have ABBBC.

Basically what i'm asking, is if i've got a chance of being accepted with my current grades, and if not, where i could find materials to teach myself the higher and advanced higher courses over the next year?

    Hi there,

Did you have an option to study Higher History at school? If you didn't have an option then you should ensure that this is mentioned on your reference from your school/college. The universities realise that some schools can only offer very limited Higher options. If you're still at school/in contact with your school then ask them whether it's possible for you to sit Higher History next year as an external candidate at their centre - they should be able to give you some support for what to teach and you can also buy SQA study books. SQA will have a lot of resources on their website giving you details of the syllabus and things you'd need to know.

With university, remember that Stirling is a really competitive uni - admissions numbers have really increased over the last few years and last year they were very very competitive. Whilst you meet their entry requirements it isn't a guarantee that they'll give you an offer. You could also consider applying for a course similar to history, such as social history or anthropology where there aren't subject specific requirements (as at a university like Edinburgh you'd probably need Higher History unless you weren't able to study it at school) and then you would be able to supplement your degree with history modules.

Hey! Thought I'd comment as I'm going to be studying History & Politics at Stirling come September (grades permitting, anyway).

I'm not too well-acquainted with the Scottish qualification system; but I do know what most universities outside the top 20 don't have a massive problem with History applicants not having studied History to the highest level.

I wouldn't imagine it would be too much of a problem. Is there any arts subject eg. Politics, English, French, Sociology, Media that you could apply for that you may have at higher? That way you could take history alongside and then just drop that subject and continue with just history after first year.

Stirling isn't too picky in my experience. They were my only unconditional, plus they asked for a science at higher (which I didn't have). I'm sure you'll be fine. Plus you have a fair bit above the entry requirements
