From MSc to PhD at UoM
If someone holds an MsC degree from the University of Manchester and wants to continue for PhD, is the same formal procedure followed?
for example:
-Are recommendation letters still needed? (Professors already have a complete picture of the student, based on grades/teaching/thesis work)
-What if TOEFL scores have expired? (I guess they can judge a student's english from his performance in the 1 year MSc and not force him to retake the exam..!)
Thank you in advance

Re: From MSc to PhD at UoMI'm currently doing a research degree at UoM and how it works is that we get put forward for a review (has some special name) at the end of the year where a panel asks us questions about the project that was done and then decide whether or not you can progress. Is yours a taught MSc or MSc by Research?(Original post by stakri)

Re: From MSc to PhD at UoMThen I suggest you have a word with your tutor and admissions tutor to see what you need to do as it may vary between programs. At the moment, for a PhD in Biochemistry it's:(Original post by stakri)
It is a taught MSc
The bold is where your MSc comes into play.For a Doctorate level programme (e.g. PhD) it will be an Upper Second UK honours degree, or international equivalent, in a relevant science or engineering discipline or a first degree with an additional UK Masters degree (or international equivalent).
Don't know yet as I only started a few weeks ago(Original post by kka25)

Re: From MSc to PhD at UoM
To get back to the initial question, if anyone has continued from taught MSc to PhD within UoM please answer. Were all the following documents still required for entry?
i am planning to apply for phd for next year (i am EU citizen starting taught MSc in September). My toefl will have expired by then and I wonder if references from manchester academics will still be needed or this is bypassed if applicant is already a manchester student.-Evidence of qualifications (certificates or transcripts) to show that you meet, or expect to meet the entry requirements;
-Evidence of English language ability, if English is not your first language;
-Two references – download our referee report form (PDF document, 50 KB);
-A research proposal (for research programmes only) – always check the department website for instructions and guidance as requirements vary;
-A copy of your passport (if you will need a visa to study here).
I can see from the website that
this seems rather stupid....wouldnt a 1-year master's degree also prove english knowledge? also, expiration of toefl does not mean that someone forgot how he speaks or writes...anyway...these are typical issues but i was just wondering...i dont want to give english exams again for no reasonAll students are required to be proficient in spoken and written English. In order to be accepted onto a PhD within the Centre for Doctoral Training non-native English speakers need to achieve an IELTS score of 7 (minimum) or TOEFL 600+ (paperbased), 250+ (computer-based), 100+ (internet-based) or Cambridge Proficiency Grade `C' (minimum) before the programme start date. Students who have been in full-time education in the UK for 3 years are exempt from this requirement.Last edited by stakri; 25-07-2012 at 14:40.
