    Scottish Baccalaureate 2012-13
Hey, so this is a thread for anyone doing/thinking of doing the Scottish Bacc in languages, sciences, social sciences or arts. Hopefully it'll evolve throughout the year for everything that we need advice on, ranting or freaking out :P
Hopefully this works out as I know they are all quite different and there isn't a lot of us
Basically I don't know if I'm doing it or not, I've done/doing the neccesary highers and advanced highers for the languages bacc (assuming I've passed) and have expressed an interest in doing the IP but my school is awful at arranging or understanding things.
    Anyone else?

I'm down for Science but I have no Idea where to start with it. I think I might drop it.
I don't really have any ideas what to do for it other than maybe the chemistry and biology behind some form of disease or illness and then do a little talk on it.

Know what you mean, I had literally no idea just a day or two ago. But today I finally sat down with a teacher and got a title.... If woman within the 5th republic are causing more problems than the Euro. Why I've agreed to do an extended project for a year on French politics ill never know...

I may have misinterpreted that wrong but the way we're doing it is that we only get to do it if a teacher expresses interest in our product :P

We won't ever get a University offer based on our grade in this will we?

Sorry, for some reason I can't understand what you mean by the first bit...too early on a sat (even though its 2pm.....shhh :P )

And no from what I've been told I don't think so. I'm only doing it out of interest. I was doing the right subjects anyway and have a lot of free periods that I might aswell fill with a project.

Sorry :P We only get to do the project if a teacher likes the projects idea, as they don't want to waste time on it unless they like it

From what I remember off my notes which I currently don't have on me (I am doing Science):

You need to design a project, where you study an area of the thing your studying (Science for example) and then you give a presentation on your findings/ design a leaflet/ make a video etc. It has quite alot of paper work. And it requires at least one outside organisation in someway (can't recall) Like you'd contact a doctor if your talking about a type of disease. You need graphs and charts. To be given the full award you have to be doing 2 Advanced Higher Sciences, and be studying/ have studied Maths to Higher/Advanced Higher (Can't remember which)

This probably isn't that helpful. But whatever

I'm thinking of asking if my school will let me do the Social Sciences one, considering it has literally just been launched and I think I'd meet the entry requirements with regards to the Advanced Highers I'm studying.

I dropped it today. It seemed like an interesting thing to do but I have too much work this year to do it properly.

My friend and I attempted the science one in 2009 (pilot year). We found SQA guidance shockingly poor and so quickly dropped it. Though things will have undoubtedly improved since the pilot, I would think very carefully before taking it on. Attempting a project on top of at least two Adv Higher investigations is a big ask...especially since it is unlikely to give you any kind of edge in uni applications.

Good luck to everyone doing the Baccalaureate this year, it's great fun (apart from the paperwork...)! If you have any questions (about the languages Bacc mainly) feel free to PM me or quote me on here or whatever, I'm keen to help out.

(An incentive to not drop the Baccalaureate, if you ever need one: if you speak at the annual support conference then you'll probably get an amazing reward - I just got a £30 book token the other week from the SQA just for standing up and speaking for 10 minutes!)

I did the languages baccalaureate last year too so feel free to ask for advice or anything! I'd really recommend doing it, it's a lot of work but something really worthwhile your time.

Do you receive a grade for it or do you just pass/fail?

You get a grade for each component (i.e. your subjects and your project), but the Baccalaureate overall is awarded as a fail, pass or distinction. I ca't exactly remember what you need for a pass, but to get a distinction you need to get at least one A in an Advanced Higher component and an A in any other component. This is as well as at least a B in the other components.

I think I'm doing one aswell but I want to do the Social Sciences one. Considering its the first year they are running it i may drop if the SQA isn't very helpful. I want to do it though so im hoping the SQA and my school are well organised etc

    Hello all,

Myself and a friend are trying to do the Baccalaureate but our school has never offered it before. Our head has given it the OK. but is trying to get in touch with other schools to see how they run it.

What schools are you guys from?

    Thanks! :-)

Edit: was supposed to quote SamG above, but forgot and can't go back on my phone, sorry

I'm doing the languages bacc and its the first time my school are doing it the IP and I'm the only one doing the full thing so that's why I started this thread, so I could bounce off other people

Now I have a title agreed with my tutor and some ideas for how to research and go forward which I plan to start next week. I have a big meeting tommorrow with my tutor to discuss deadlines and stuff, but I can't help but feel I'm quite behind and should be further along, how far has everyone else got?
