    How hard is higher history?
I'm sure I've made this thread before.

I picked standard grade modern studies as I was disheartened with the only topics in standard grade being WW1 and WW2. I looked at the options choice booklet for higher. The topics weren't all war orientated, and I didn't really want to pick modern studies as I feel it is too tedious and contrived.

I got 100% in my standard grade modern studies prelim, and I achieved grade 1 in every single essay for standard grade English, and in the timed writing prelim, so writing is one of my better qualities.

I want to study medicine, thus I will need an A in higher history. My question is, how difficult is it? Should I cope okay? I really don't want to sign myself up for a subject which I'm no good at, especially since highers are such an important part of applying for medicine! I dread being in the situation that I was with standard grade Graphic Communication where I was kicking myself for picking it.

    Thanks everyone!

    The topics we're doing are:

    Modern British History 1850-1979
    Migration and Empire Paper 2
The Rise of Nationalism in Germany

hey there! if you can do the modern studies, you should be fine. I done the two of those three topics (our school doesn't cover Germany at higher, we do Russia instead) but I honestly believe that you'll cope fine. As long as you can write an essay, and revise you'll be okay. there is no previous knowledge needed, as things such as the structure of the course is different to standard grade, so everyone will be learning the same new things.

I hope I've been of help, and good luck!

As with every subject, it's dependent on how much work you put it! However, I see no reason why you shouldn't be able to achieve that grade! Paper 2 (migration and empire topic) is a doddle for most people, and the extended essay is a good grade booster to have in the bag, as it's worth 30% The thing that I struggle the most with is not knowing what essay would come up! Teachers tended to advise us to pick about 3 essays from the two topics to focus on, but as always it's a bit risky!

What about modern british history? How difficult is that? If you don't mind me asking, what grade did you get for higher hisyory? (or are you awaiting results?)

I found some aspects hard, and some easier. We were taught it essay by essay, for example the first one we were taught was the "acts" one, which tended to be "how democratic was Britain before.." etc. I personally found this one challenging as there were a lot of dates to remember, but for many it was one of their favourites! it depends on what you fin easiest, which unfortunately makes it difficult for me to be of any help! I'm still waiting on results, I got an overall C in my prelim (totally screwed it up by only doing one essay! timing was my major issue) but all my other tests/essays were grade As so hoping for a B minimum.

If you put in all the work, and have a consistent and organized teacher (which makes a massive difference imo) then you should get an A.
I worked my ass off in 5th year and got one, though probably due to how hard working and committed my teacher was.

well done on your A! what topics did your school do? and this is a very valid point - we used to get regular inspections of our folders to make sure they were organised!

As long as you are good with essays you should be ok. I have a friend who crashed history last year and she did fine in the higher. She is predicted for an A and I'm pretty sure she'll get it. As long as you put the work in you should get an A. History is one of the better subjects to crash because you don't really need to know any Standard Grade stuff and you won't trip up because you didn't do SG (not like biology where so much SG stuff came up. That was not a good subject to crash). Its an interesting subject so i hope you enjoy it and get an A.
