HD Monitor or HDTV for desktop pc and ps3 use?
Hey guys. I want to use my desktop pc and ps3 interchangeably using the same display device. I just have some questions:
1) Would it be better to use a 1080p monitor or a full hd tv? For my desk I'm looking around 24-27".
2) My desktop has a HDMI port. Is it simply a case of just plugging a hdmi cable from my desktop pc to the monitor/hdtv and then one from there to the ps3?
3) My graphics card is Radeon HD 7700 series. Is it capable of transmitting video and sound to the built in speakers in the hdtv?
Please could someone help me come to a solution. I'm not very tech savvy so any help is much appreciated!

2) Yes it is, though with the PS3 when you power it up you got to hold the power button so it reconfigures for HD use......... with desktop you got to set it up, not sure, got to try the control center for AMD
3) Yes it should, HD cable transfer video and sound signals -
Re: HD Monitor or HDTV for desktop pc and ps3 use?Ok I've scrapped the idea of getting a hdtv. Just going to get a 1080p monitor instead. Will you let me know if this configuration would work well:(Original post by Iqbal007)

- A hdmi cable going from my desktop to the hdmi port on the monitor.
- a hdmi-to-dvi cable going from the hdmi port on the ps3 to the dvi port on the monitor.
- the sound cables from the ps3 hooking onto external speakers (my pc has a different speaker).
A question though. With both the ps3 and desktop being plugged into the monitor can i just change the source on the monitor to get it from one to another? or will it only allow one source to be plugged in at a time? thanks man! -

I'm not sure, it would be conflicting sources, it would work if it has an input of source button on your monitor. Which it should, it's cos mine only has 1 port. -
Re: HD Monitor or HDTV for desktop pc and ps3 use?
It should work however a couple of things to note.
Changing sources on most monitors is a fiddly processes. You often need to go into a menu somewhere.
The speakers in most monitors are often fairly weak so don't expect excellent sound. It's probably ok for youtube videos but I wouldn't like it so much for gaming or films.
Using a HDMI to DVI converter should be fine but there won't be any sound (DVI is graphics only) -
Re: HD Monitor or HDTV for desktop pc and ps3 use?I only know of LG monitors personally but you just press two buttons to change input on LGs. Press the menu button then press 'input' and it's done.(Original post by Isometrix)

Re: HD Monitor or HDTV for desktop pc and ps3 use? You're better off using the DVI cable for your PC (your 7770 should have a DVI port) and the HDMI for your ps3 as that is the highest output you can get from the ps3. Also i'd use your external speakers for the PC and use your monitor speakers for the ps3 as HDMI sends across audio anyway and i've had issues using external speakers.(Original post by Isometrix)

Re: HD Monitor or HDTV for desktop pc and ps3 use?
Hey guys sorry to refresh this old thread but I'm still confused about this.
Current situation:
Have a HD monitor with a HDMI and DVI port. The hdmi port is connected to my laptop right now as part of an extended display.
I want to attach my PS3 to my monitor. I understand a HDMI to DVI cable (going from the ps3 to dvi port on my monitor) will allow me to get the video I need. The issue I'm now stuck with is the sound. I looked at some youtube tutorials, and it seems the RCA cables need to be used and plugged into a stereo adapter (similar to this). Then I need a female-to-female adapter that allows my external speakers to be plugged into the stereo adapter. Apparently this will get me the sound.
So guys, does this seem like the correct configuration? I'm hoping someone who's done this before can tell me, but I'm happy to hear from anyone! -
Re: HD Monitor or HDTV for desktop pc and ps3 use?
Why not unplug the laptop and plug in the ps3, your making it harder than it is. If it was a desktop then just use dvi to dvi and the HDMI for the ps3
And don't the ps3 have a headset port, you could always use a jack to jack cable

Re: HD Monitor or HDTV for desktop pc and ps3 use?If your monitor has speakers then the easiest option is as kumori says and use HDMI from the PS3 to the monitor and then either swap the cable over or use the HDMI-DVI option for the laptop.(Original post by Isometrix)

Otherwise what you've suggested doing should work fine.
