    Do we need role models?
Role is something people play, model is something people make, both of those things are fake.
While it's argued that role models can positively stimulate and encourage children (and adults) in society, is it not also true that role models can bring about negative effects in society, such as the Kardashians and unrealistic expectations projected on society - making people feel insignificant and sub-parr.

Do you think that to some degree the feeling that we need role models in society adds hugely to this celebrity culture - the hopeless romanticism of others lives that encourages the fake, superficial world that we see every-time we turn on our televisions?

Is there a difference between heroes and role models?

Even at 20 you still have role models although it would be a little more mature than someone saying '******' (The N word) layered over someone pressing the demo button of a Casio keyboard.

It's funny how whenever I hear someone mention role models I always think of rappers.

In fact, several of my role models at the moment are Youtuber gamers like Simon Lane or Total Biscuit because I feel I learn something from how they look at games and it's a great way of applying the same rules to other scenarios beyond entertainment. At least with Youtubers, or fairly low key ones, you know they're not some spoiled brats paid millions to appear on tv to mutter nonsense.

It is important not to have too few role models because you literally become that person, although it's not really my place to tell people whether or not it's good for them to.

I also don't like role models being applied to people like me, i.e. age, interest etc because it's patronising.

If you aspire to something, it is likely that will admire someone who has done it before or better than you. Hopefully if you aspire to something positive, then your role models will be positive as well. Perhaps it is a cause or perhaps it is a symptom, but I suspect that a life without any role models would most likely be a life of mediocrity.
