Who else is dong the M.I.Tx course?
Well as some of you know, there has been a free on-line MIT course announced recently. If you complete it, you will receive an actual degree from MIT in the form of a certificate although the vale of this degree is still not certain. I was just wondering if anyone else is also doing this course. btw, I'm only in year 11 and I don't think I can actually DO this course, although there is no harm in trying.
If you want more info---> http://mitx.mit.edu/

However, isn't the only course available right now something to do with Electrical? I know they plan on expanding the course options available in the near future. Also, how long would one of these courses take? I have a lot of work on my plate at the moment already, so with something like this on top may just be a little too much. -

I remember reading that they hey recommend that you spend 10 hours a week on the course ^^

Content is not tremendously hard, since it is just a couple of first year electronic modules.
Knowing things like: Kirchhoff's current and voltage Laws, logic gates, some basic relationships (e.g. V = R*I , P = V*I = V^2 /R = R*I^2) would make the life much easier. -
Re: Who else is dong the M.I.Tx course?I don't think this course will have much value, but does look interesting. If I had the time I'd have enrolled.(Original post by MITx Website)
If you successfully complete the course, you will receive an electronic certificate of accomplishment from MITx. This certificate will indicate that you earned it from MITx’s pilot course. In this prototype version, MITx will not require that you be tested in a testing center or otherwise have your identity certified in order to receive this certificate. -

So how are we all enjoying this then? Im finding it ok to be honest, just a bit rusty with the thevenin and norton stuff as i havent done it in 10 years+.....Up to date so far (week 3), 100%ed it all too, so that'll do me

Re: Who else is dong the M.I.Tx course?
How's everyone getting on with this?
If I'd have finished A-level physics I would have had a bash - but I won't finish until June, and I don't have the time at the moment. I do, however, have a friend who is doing it purely out of interest.
I'm looking forward to them offering this/ other courses again. Certainly wouldn't be a bad thing to work through - would you say it's worth doing?
I'm pretty convinced though that it will never be worth that much, as it could be argued that they can't actually monitor exactly who is submitting the work etc. Thoughts?Last edited by shorty.loves.angels; 26-03-2012 at 13:11. -
Re: Who else is dong the M.I.Tx course?
I think it's a really good idea, especially if you are on the fence about what might interest you in a degree. I enrolled and after a few sessions realised that circuits and electronics is one thing i never want to do again. however, the teaching on it is really good and can't wait for them to release something more to my taste.

Re: Who else is dong the M.I.Tx course?I am doing it alongside my degree. The course is very beneficial. The one thing I particularly like is the sandbox.(Original post by shorty.loves.angels)

If yes...then what about homeworks and assignments which was also mentioned on the website? -

Two lowest scored labs and homeworks will not be counted towards the final grade.
So far you have missed 3 labs and homeworks. They don't count for a lot of marks, so there is still point in joining the course. -
Re: Who else is dong the M.I.Tx course?
I've signed up for the 3.091x Introduction to Solid State Chemistry. Shouldn't be too hard considering I'm studying Chemistry but thought it would be interesting to learn from a different perspective- and also I'm not too great at kinetics so would help to really cement it in my brain!
It's not long, October till January but how do the homework assignments work with MITx? Are they submitted online? Are they like little quizzes or actual assignments? Is there a formal exam? There's not much information since it's so new...

- homeworks are submitted online
- homeworks consist of multiple choice questions
- usually you also need to submit an interactive lab assignment every week (the fun part)
-There is a formal examination. Again, multiple choice questions. -
